Designed for 45°C Temperatures: The "XShelter Heat Alpha Hoodie"—How Did Workman Achieve Such High Evaporative Cooling Performance?
Workman has launched the "XShelter Heat Alpha Hoodie," an environmentally adaptive garment for just 2,900 yen. Designed for scorching 45°C heat, it's packed with 16 incredible features.
While its design is seriously engineered for pros working in harsh conditions, it also packs some clever features, like a neck guard that turns into an ice-cold collar when wet.
In this article, we chat with Yutaro Hagura, Manager at Workman's 1st Product Development Department, to get the inside scoop on the hoodie's technical approach and how the company pulls off high-performance gear at such low prices.
From Hot Summers to Extreme Heat—The Story Behind the "Cooler When Worn" Hoodie Designed for 45°C
What inspired the development of Workman's new "XShelter Heat Alpha Hoodie"?
The main concept is simple: "It's cooler to wear it than to go without." Japan has been hit with intense heatwaves in recent years, which got us thinking about creating apparel that could handle extreme heat environments, even those hitting 45°C. That was the starting point for the XShelter Heat series.Previously, summer apparel functions were mainly centered around contact cooling and moisture-wicking, quick-dry technology. But we felt a growing need to go one step further—to create something that could truly protect the body in even harsher conditions.

Where does the new Heat Alpha fit into the XShelter series?
The XShelter series has a few different lines. Alpha (α) is our primary outerwear line, known for its evaporative cooling, quick-drying, and heat-blocking properties. The most notable feature is that it's incredibly lightweight. In contrast, Beta (β) is mainly used as innerwear, offering stretch, contact cooling, and breathability. Then there's our top-tier model, Omega (Ω), a workwear product that masterfully combines two conflicting features: high-level heat shielding and exceptional breathability.
We're not just targeting the general outdoor market; the more demanding workwear sector is definitely on our radar. Omega was designed primarily for workwear, boasting a heat-shielding rate higher than a standard S45 parasol. While you can increase heat shielding by weaving a fabric more densely, that sacrifices airflow. The real challenge was blending technologies to block heat while maintaining that crucial breathability.
The new Alpha Hoodie was born from this very idea: taking the sun-protection technology we perfected for workwear and adapting it for everyday outdoor activities like gardening or enjoying a day by the river.
The Science of Evaporative Cooling and Heat Shielding: How a Combination of Threads Creates a -10°C Effect
Test data for this hoodie shows a remarkable -10°C cooling effect. How exactly is this achieved?
It starts with the basic principle of high heat-shielding, just like a parasol. On top of that, we use evaporative cooling—the process where a liquid turning into a gas draws heat from its surroundings. For this hoodie, we used two different types of yarn. On the inside, we have a polypropylene yarn that doesn't absorb any water. On the outside, we placed a highly diffusive yarn that excels at absorbing and wicking moisture away. The synergy between the inner layer pushing moisture out and the outer layer pulling it up rapidly spreads the moisture, boosting the evaporative cooling effect. The key is how fast that moisture spreads. The faster it diffuses, the more heat it pulls away from your body, leading to that incredible 10°C drop we saw in our tests.
We heard the yarn itself is also specially designed.
That's right. The outer layer uses a yarn infused with titanium ore. This yarn reflects light, which provides the heat-shielding effect. The trick is that using too much of this mineral-infused yarn can make the fabric stiff and heavy. So, we created a hybrid structure, mixing the mineral-infused yarn with an ultra-light, buoyant yarn that doesn't absorb any water. We went through a lot of trial and error—testing different warp and weft combinations, moving yarns to the inner layer to enhance moisture absorption—until we landed on the perfect functional design.
Does that same diffusion property also explain how it achieves sustained cooling?
Exactly. Standard "contact cooling" fabrics feel cold to the touch because they instantly draw away a burst of heat. But the Alpha Hoodie is different. It absorbs and spreads moisture across a wide surface area, so you get a cooling sensation over a "plane" rather than a single "point." This ability to spread moisture over a larger area allows it to draw away more ambient heat, resulting in a long-lasting cooling effect. It reportedly dries completely in about 17 minutes. So if it starts to feel dry, can you just spritz it with some water, or will sweating again reactivate the same cooling effect?
Yes. It's incredibly quick-drying, so if it starts to dry out, you can just add a little moisture to reactivate the evaporative cooling effect.Evolving into a Visual Safety Tool and Practical Feature

This product features a "UV Thermo Alert Checker" that visually indicates changes in UV levels and temperature. What was the goal behind this feature?
With new heatstroke prevention regulations coming into effect in June 2025, we designed this for work environments. The idea is that a coworker can see the indicators and say, "Hey, it's over 30°C," or "The sun's intense, let's take a water break." The temperature sensor has an underline that turns red above 30°C, and the UV sensor makes the logo glow blue in strong sunlight. When we brought this feature to the general public, we hoped it would be helpful for people who might not realize how hot it is, like children. Others can see the alert and know, "It's over 30°C; they need to drink some water before it gets dangerous."

It’s also quite unique that you can stow the hood to create a stand-up collar, and even wet it to use as a cooling neck guard.
To be honest, it was born out of a playful moment during development, almost by chance. As we were dabbing the fabric with water to test its cooling effect, we thought, "What if we rolled it up? Wouldn't it feel even colder?" This led to the idea of making the fabric slightly thicker, which then evolved into the ice neck guard feature. We've also made other usability updates, like designing the hood to block direct sunlight based on its angle, and adding a roll-up function to the cuffs so you can easily push up your sleeves when it gets hot.

I heard the silhouette is on the tighter side, similar to workwear.
Since it's inspired by workwear, which focuses on mobility, it features a slightly snug fit that won't get in your way, rather than a baggy one. It might seem a little tight compared to mainstream fashion trends, but it's actually a bit looser than typical work clothes. You can also open the vents on the back and underarms to instantly release built-up heat and humidity, ventilating the inside of the hoodie..jpg?w=672&fm=webp)

A Unique Product Philosophy: Achieving High Functionality for 2,900 Yen
How were you able to pack in so many features and still achieve a price of 2,900 yen?
The development took about three years. At first, it wasn't so packed with features. We started with the simple goals of "making a heat-blocking hoodie" and "making a breathable hoodie." It wasn't so much about cutting corners to make it cheap, but rather that we were able to keep the price down by cleverly combining different elements. Another major factor is that we produce it in large volumes for the professional market, which allows us to reduce costs as much as possible. Is there a combination that enhances its effectiveness when wearing this hoodie?
By wearing the "β" inner layer under the "α" outer layer, you can achieve a cooling effect that feels up to 6.8 degrees Celsius cooler. So, for the best cooling experience, it's more effective to pair it with the "β" product and wet it, rather than just wearing a regular T-shirt underneath.
That's right. Because of its high moisture-wicking properties, combining them and utilizing moisture in that way is the most effective. Finally, as the developer, what benefits have you noticed from actually wearing it?
I wore this hoodie to the beach, and it felt great when my wife tried on the one I took off and said, "Wow, this is completely different." It's also breathable, so it feels incredibly resistant to heat and stuffiness compared to other fabrics. Even if you go in the ocean or a river, the fabric dries in about 17 minutes, so I think you can even use it like a rash guard. However, we haven't yet completed life testing for durability against factors like saltwater, so that remains a slight concern. Its functionality won't degrade from machine washing, but the inner side is sensitive to iron heat, which can damage the threads, so please be careful with that.
Clothing is transforming from a mere pursuit of fashion and comfort into "protective gear for the body" amidst harsh climate change. The functionality Workman has honed in professional environments is now being unleashed to safeguard our daily leisure activities and overall well-being. Born from the counterintuitive concept that "it’s cooler with it on," the "XShelter Heat Alpha Hoodie" showcases the potential of "environmentally adaptive wear" for an era of extreme heat.
