Providing the Best Bags that Will Become the Standard of the Next Generation: MONOLITH's Sophisticated Items
With its simple yet sophisticated design and high functionality, "MONOLITH" creates bags that are essential for the modern urban lifestyle.
This time, we have MONOLITH director Taisuke Nakamuro introduce the brand's concept and its functional items.
"Carrying" as a Keyword and 3 Concepts
"The brand started in November 2020 as a new venture by SEIBAN, which has a history of over 100 years and is famous for making school satchels, aiming to lead the next 100 years. The project had started moving about a year before the launch."We began with creating the concept, and the major keyword decided was 'carrying.' We set three concepts as the pillars: 'functionality,' 'durability,' and 'rationality,' and launched the MONOLITH bag brand.
"To explain each one, starting with functionality, after using various bags, I often thought, 'If only it were a bit more functional' when choosing simple designs. That was something I couldn't compromise on.
"Regarding durability, for example, school satchels are designed to last at least six years, so they must not break. We aim to reflect SEIBAN's ergonomics and know-how in manufacturing.
"The final aspect, rationality, doesn't just mean having a good design or a beautiful shape. Every design and function must have meaning and be reasonable. These three aspects form the basic concepts of MONOLITH."
3 Lines Equipped with These 3 Concepts
Now that we have heard about MONOLITH's three concepts, there are three lines incorporating them. Let's delve into MONOLITH's craftsmanship by introducing the representative items from each line."A representative item is the backpack, and it's divided into three lines: 'STANDARD,' 'OFFICE,' and 'PRO.'
"We initially started with the 'BACKPACK STANDARD' product, then expanded to designs for office use, people who frequently handle their laptops, and those who travel often with the 'PRO' products. I will introduce them in order from the 'BACKPACK STANDARD.'
"The STANDARD is the prototypical item of the brand, using ballistic nylon known for its tearing strength, and we use hollow fibers, which hollow out the inside, making it lightweight.
"The back features polyurethane coating to further enhance strength.
"While simple, it has more pockets than typical backpacks. The front pocket’s organizer pocket can hold small items like smartphones and notepads. There are also side pockets; the left-side magnet pocket has a unique design, now an iconic feature of the brand.
"The main compartment has a pocket for laptops on the back side and an organizer pocket for small items. The front side also has pockets for various uses, aiming to eliminate dead space inside the bag.
"As for carrying comfort, the harness that corresponds to the shoulder belts features a distinctive curve designed to fit the body."
