Allbirds' Mission to Create Eco-Friendly Shoes
Allbirds is a lifestyle brand that began when former New Zealand soccer national team legend Tim Brown met Joey Zwillinger, an expert in renewable biotechnology. The brand's marketing director in Japan, Mitsuhiro Minowa, talks about Allbirds' mission.
The meeting between Tim Brown, who served as deputy captain of the New Zealand team in the South Africa World Cup (right), and biotechnology specialist Joey Zwillinger (left), was initiated by their wives who were college friends.
"Globally, the shoe industry produces about 20 billion pairs of shoes each year, the majority of which use petroleum-based materials that impact the environment. The manufacturing process emits CO2, contributing to global warming. Allbirds aims to address this critical situation by proposing shoes and apparel made in a better, more eco-friendly way.
"To achieve this, founder Tim Brown focused on natural materials. One was Merino wool from sheep, a number that is larger than the population of New Zealand. We emphasize not burdening the environment by using this renewable, natural material, which offers excellent breathability, insulation, and durability, in our uppers and inners."
