Does Web3 Have to Be a Male-Dominated Space? A Breakthrough NFT Supporting Women & Minorities: World of Women (Part 1)

The realms of blockchain and Web3 have initially been mostly male-driven. For those who were previously disconnected from gaming and investment, it might have felt like being left behind in the blink of an eye.
In 2021, a unique company called World of Women emerged with the goal of expanding opportunities for women and other diverse communities such as LGBTQ+ to shine in the world of Web3/NFT art.
What fueled the creation of powerful NFTs and the construction of a vibrant community with companions sharing the same vision? What kind of world are these women aiming for?
We interviewed Adelina Mattera, one of the founding members and Communications Director of "World of Women."

Starting from 10,000 Profile Pictures

What was the background behind launching "World of Women" in a male-dominated world?
Both the financial and tech industries are predominantly male, but since Web3 is a new frontier, we believed that women and other diverse minorities such as LGBTQ+ should also be at the forefront.
 
As the situation has slightly changed now, we established "World of Women" with four friends driven by a strong mission not to let the new Web3 space become another male-dominated world like in the past. We wanted it to be different.
In July 2021, we released our first original collection "World of Women" with the aim of promoting NFTs that empower (bringing out abilities and granting authority to) women and minorities.
This idea came from artist Yam Karkai (Co-founder and Creative Director), who was already working on 1:1 art and NFTs at the time.
While navigating Web3, she thought it would be cool to create her own profile pictures like those everyone around her already had. She realized that collecting everyone's profile pictures would result in a grand artwork, so she compiled a collection of 10,000 profile pictures (PFP: Profile Picture/NFT art used as an avatar on social media).

Backed by Support from a Broad Audience

Did the next collection you released create a new trend as well?
In March 2022, we announced our second collection, World of Women Galaxy.
While this also started as converting PFPs to NFTs, the cumulative effort from the first collection led to what became a noteworthy phenomenon known as a "multidimensional ecosystem" (a system where various products, industries, and services interconnect to create significant revenue structures).
The communities of "World of Women" and "World of Women Galaxy" were able to provide further value by linking with all utility in the real world, including the building of a universe, gamification, and multi-channel activation.
These two collections helped establish a brand that transcended the bounds of Web3, bringing value not just to the community but to the brand as a whole through partnerships, dealings, sales, and many other avenues. Based on these collections, we continue to provide additional value to our community in various fields.
Moreover, it was truly gratifying to see the collections resonate not only with the entire Web3 space but also receiving endorsements from famous collectors and collaborators such as Reese Witherspoon (actress and film producer), Eva Longoria (actress), Gary Vaynerchuk (serial investor), Pranksy (the world’s leading NFT investor and collector), and Madonna (singer-songwriter).
Additionally, "World of Women" #5672 was auctioned at the most prestigious "Christies London Evening Sale" at Christies, the British auction house, and sold for 567,000 pounds (approximately 90,358,566 yen as of February 10). It achieved the highest sales in history for NFTs created by a female-centric collection in Web3.
