At 55,000 JPY Each, Overseas Celebrities Are Hooked on the 'LED Light Therapy Face Mask' from CurrentBody.

In recent years, the market for at-home beauty devices has been growing rapidly worldwide.
The device capturing the attention of international celebrities and climbing in popularity, despite its high price of 55,000 yen, is the 'LED Light Therapy Face Mask,' from British beauty device brand, CurrentBody. Released in Japan in 2023, it has instantly generated buzz on social media.
Why do beauty-savvy international celebrities endorse it? How does LED work on the skin? I spoke with founder Laurence Newman to find out more.

4 Benefits of Using the 'LED Mask'

When we think of LEDs, we think of light bulbs, but what benefits do they bring to the skin precisely?
LED stands for light-emitting diode, which produces light at various wavelengths. Short wavelengths give off violet to blues, while longer wavelengths give off orange to reds. Each of these color ranges has different features.
The reason LED began to be known in the beauty and medical fields is thanks to NASA. They noticed the healing, muscle growth, and vision rehabilitation effects of LEDs and started using them to help astronauts dealing with muscle deterioration and fatigue under zero-gravity conditions.
It was later discovered that this also helped with skin repair. This treatment has now gained popularity, primarily in Western clinics.

The wavelength of the LED light is proportional to its penetration depth in the skin. Long-wavelength red LEDs reach the dermis layer of the skin, promoting the production of collagen[1] and elastin[2]. Yellow LEDs target the intermediate skin layer (basal layer) supporting natural skin shedding[3]. Short-wavelength green LEDs work on the skin's surface, improving pigmentation and causing skin brightening.
An additional advantage of LEDs is that people of all skin types can benefit. It is also safe to use for those with dry or sensitive skin.
With the surge of LED devices on the market, what sets CurrentBody's LED Light Therapy Face Mask apart?
We focused on four points when developing the LED Light Therapy Face Mask.
First is coverage. With previous products, the light would reach areas directly below the LEDs, but there would be unevenness in areas between the lights. For instance, a possible drawback with home beauty devices is that while they effectively cover the cheeks, they may not reach around the facial contours.
So, through our patented technology called 'Pillow TechnologyTM', we have been able to enhance light dispersion and achieve wide coverage. Independent testing has verified that it covers the entire targeted area.

The second point is precision. It's essential to ensure the authenticity of the LED wavelengths claimed by the product. The device's effectiveness relies on whether the LED wavelength precisely matches the clinically proven beneficial wavelength.
CurrentBody has substantiated this with clinical results from an independent organization.

The third point is power. If the power is too low, it won't be effective, and too much can damage the skin. Providing the correct wavelength and balancing the output strength are vital aspects.
Finally, the time factor is significant. It's not true that the longer the LED light is on, the better the effect. This is because there is a limit on how much LED light the skin can respond to. We have researched to determine the optimal duration of use and achieved a device that shows effects from 3 weeks to 1 month when used once daily for 10 minutes, 3 to 5 times a week.
