The Reason RIMOWA's "Original" Collection Is the King of Aluminum Suitcases

When choosing a suitcase, what factors are prioritized? There are various elements such as design, lightness, and portability, but the ability to safely transport belongings to the destination—its “durability”—is undoubtedly non-negotiable.
In this context, the first brand that comes to mind is RIMOWA and its Original Collection. RIMOWA released the world’s first aluminum suitcase with a groove design in 1950, and despite several model updates, has retained its fundamental design. The Original suitcase has established itself as a staple item for the brand.
In this article, we will unveil the allure of the Original, which should be synonymous with tough suitcases.

The Development of the World's First Aluminum Suitcase

The origins of RIMOWA can be traced back to 1898 when founder Paul Morszeck opened a bag workshop in Cologne, Germany. He crafted trunks using cowhide and wood for the European upper-class vacationers traveling by train.
The name RIMOWA was given by Paul’s son, Richard Morszeck. After taking over the workshop, Richard renamed the brand RIMOWA in the 1930s, combining his name with the first letters of the German word Warenzeichen (trademark).

The advent of aluminum suitcases occurred in the 1920s after World War I.
At that time, a fire broke out in a building near the headquarters, and Paul discovered a material that remained almost intact among the charred debris and timber: aluminum. Richard, the second generation, focused on the lightweight and durability of this material and began development on the suitcase.
The world’s first aluminum suitcase, released in 1937, was lighter than leather and truly robust. It quickly became a global hit.
Despite RIMOWA being famous for its groove design on the aluminum exterior, it is said that flat aluminum was initially used.

The Iconic Groove Design Inspired by German Aircraft

The groove design was conceived in the 1950s. The technology to create the grooves on the aluminum surface was inspired by the design technology of the “Junkers F13,” which was Germany’s cutting-edge aircraft at the time.
Thus, the aluminum suitcase featuring the flagship groove design was born. Originally created to enhance durability against shocks and distortions, the groove design has not only imparted a sophisticated image to the suitcase but also provided an iconic element that is instantly recognizable as RIMOWA.

In 2000, RIMOWA launched a suitcase made from polycarbonate resin. This resin, originally used for aircraft windows, is lighter and more flexible than aluminum, with excellent resilience and resistance to damage.
The "Essential" featuring this material recorded explosive sales and became such a popular collection that, in some countries, the polycarbonate Essential is favored over aluminum cases.
However, even after Essential's release, the Original has continued to maintain its consistent popularity.
