The 'zipper' or 'fastener' is a necessary component applied on all kinds of fashion items such as clothes, bags, and boots. It's an essential part for various items due to its role in 'closing' things, ranging from tents to car seats.
YKK is the company that has built a nearly absolute position in this market. It produces more than 3 million kilometers of zippers annually, and when including 'attach/detach = fastening' products in general, such as snaps and buttons, hook-and-loop fasteners, the total number of products exceeds 100,000 types.
For this article, we investigated some of the technologies hidden in the seemingly inconspicuous but indispensable zipper technology, with collaboration from the YKK 'Technology Innovation Center'.
In Part 1, we focused on the unique zipper quality element of 'the feel of sliding = the feel when opening and closing a zipper'. It revealed unique technologies to design the sense of touch.
This second part discusses 'sustainability', which has become a significant issue in the fashion industry in recent years. As seen by the continuous efforts by giants such as LVMH, Kering, Prada, and others to abandon real fur and pursue carbon neutrality in the supply chain, sustainability initiatives seem to be an essential requirement for luxury. This trend is not limited to emerging brands advocating ethical principles or naturalist outdoor brands.
