Young ah SEONG
In 2012, she completed her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Information Studies at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, earning a Doctorate in Interdisciplinary Information Studies. After gaining experience in UX Design/UX Strategy at the DMC Research Institute and the Corporate Design Management Center of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., she returned to the academic field as a specially appointed researcher at the University of Tokyo's JST Kawahara ERATO Universal Information Network Project to continually explore the near future. Since 2020, she has been a visiting associate professor at Hosei University's Faculty of Design and Engineering. She is engaged in practical design related to understanding emotion experiences that change through interaction and creating new values. She also works on startup consulting and media art production. She has received several awards, including the Innovative Technologies Special Prize 2021, ACM UIST Best Demonstration Award 2020, IEEE Robosoft Best Paper Award 2020, IEEE Robosoft Best Demonstration Award 2019, Japan Virtual Reality Society Outstanding Paper Award, and the Interaction 2018 Best Interactive Presentation Award.
The Domain of Emotional Design & Affective Design
First, could you tell us about your research interests and domain?
I am a researcher in the field of HCI (Human-Computer Interaction), broadly focusing on interaction design. While many researchers in interaction design have core technical skills, my primary interest lies in humans. When we apply technology to create products or interfaces, it causes changes in emotions and behaviors through usage. If we were to define this domain that specializes in these emotional changes, it might be termed as emotional design or affective design.
The definition of affective design is ambiguous, but the field of affective computing was first proposed by researchers at MIT. It focuses on technologies that sense or analyze human emotions. Regarding emotional design, Donald Norman in the design field emphasizes the influence on human emotions. From both these perspectives, I aim to understand the impact of design on changes in human emotions and behaviors, and propose interactive systems and services that design people's experiences by reflecting these insights. Strictly speaking, if we distinguish between emotional and affective, emotional refers to emotions that arise from certain stimuli, and affective includes broader physiological changes that can trigger actions subconsciously. In Japanese, it is sometimes referred to as "情動" (jodo).
