Enhanced Comfort & Reduced Weight! The Evolution of Adidas "Adizero Boston 13"

2025.06.20
The "Boston" series by adidas, inspired by the winners of the Boston Marathon—the world's oldest citizen marathon—was first introduced in 1982 and has become one of the brand’s signature staples. Now, 42 years after the debut of the first model, the 13th generation, the Adizero Boston 13, has been released.
This update, the first in roughly two years, features a 13.8% increase in the Lightstrike Pro midsole compared to the previous model, enhancing cushioning and responsiveness. In addition, the shoe is about 15g lighter (for 27 cm size) than its predecessor. So, how exactly has this latest model evolved?

The Goal: The Ultimate High-speed Training Shoe

"Adizero Boston 13 is a shoe developed with the goal of being the ultimate high-speed training shoe. While the Adizero Boston has long been loved by both elite athletes and recreational runners, feedback showed a growing demand for more comfort.
"The Adizero Boston was designed for tempo runs and intervals—training that requires speed and intensity. To support these high-intensity workouts with more comfort, we implemented upgrades," shared Masaya Kobayashi of adidas Japan K.K.

The midsole structure remains the same as before, with low-density, highly responsive Lightstrike Pro on top, firmer and more stable Lightstrike on the bottom, and Energyrods 2.0—five glass fiber rods that promote propulsion.
However, in the latest "Adizero Boston 13," the Lightstrike Pro layer has been increased by 13.8% compared to the previous model, offering a softer and more comfortable ride.
The prior model had a stack height of 39.5mm at the heel and 31mm at the forefoot, but the new version features 36mm at the heel and 30mm at the forefoot. The drop (difference in height from heel to toe) has become more moderate too, shifting from 8.5mm to 6mm, making it feel closer to flat.
"As for the drop changes, current top racing models—Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2 and Adizero Adios Pro 4—have drops of 3mm and 4mm respectively. Narrowing the gap brings the ride feeling of this training model a bit closer to those race-day shoes. That’s the main reason for the adjustment."

Upper Design Focusing on Comfort & Fit

The upper of the previous Adizero Boston 12 had more of a racing-shoe feel, but this latest model has been redesigned for both breathability and lightness while also making comfort and fit top priorities.
"Compared with the previous version, the mesh on the upper is now lighter and more breathable. Cushion pads have been added to the tongue and collar for a softer feel. The result is a fit that’s both secure and easy on your feet. Additionally, the toe, upper side, and heel sections are well reinforced, so your stride remains steady and stable even when running at high speeds."
The outsole combines highly durable and grippy Continental rubber with Lighttraxion, which is both light and grippy, achieving an optimal balance. The use of Lighttraxion is also a key factor in reducing the shoe's overall weight.

A Shoe with Exceptional Smoothness in Each Stride

Upon putting them on, the most striking impression is how comfortable the fit is—thanks in large part to the cushion pads at the heel and tongue.
On the run, the shoe delivers an optimal balance between propulsion and stability. There’s enough bounce without an excessive kick, and no wobbling or stiffness from the Energyrods. The ride is comfortable yet stable from landing to toe-off.
The glass fiber Energyrods offer more flexibility than carbon, the forefoot volume of Lightstrike Pro is significant, and the rear section is mainly Lightstrike foam. The broad contact area at the front—all of this feels precisely calculated. The result is a sensation of being able to maintain a steady and comfortable pace, even over longer distances.

Within Adidas's lineup, the lightweight, high-speed training model "Adizero Evo SL" enjoys strong popularity.
This model, outfitted with a full-length Lightstrike Pro midsole, offers a pleasant bounce and makes it easy to pick up speed. However, in terms of stability, the "Adizero Boston 13" outperforms it. Personally, I find myself leaning toward the "Adizero Boston 13" all the more as the running distance increases.
While the "Adizero Boston 13" is positioned by Adidas as a training shoe for runners who use their top racing models during competitions, it seems to be the ideal race shoe as well for those aiming to finish a full marathon in three or four hours.
