What Is the Value of 'AIR✕AIR,' a Fabric that Stands Out From Conventional Functional Fibers by Focusing on Its Air Layer?

2025.09.22
MIRAISOZAI Inc. has developed a new material called "AIR✕AIR." Unlike conventional functional fabrics, it was created with a novel approach focusing on "air." In fact, "AIR✕AIR" was created by the same developer behind the high-performance material "SHELTECH®."
We spoke with the company's CEO, Yoshitaka Matsui, who developed "SHELTECH®" at his former company, about the patent-pending technology behind "AIR✕AIR" and the future this material holds for the textile industry.

PROFILE

Yoshitaka Matsui

1997–2010: Mastered the ABCs of product and material development in the product department at Asahiya in Nagoya.

2010–2022: Joined Saragai Iryo, then a sewing factory, where he learned the ins and outs of garment sewing and material sourcing. He drove the development of unique fabrics to set the company apart. From 2012, he served as a director, providing management support.

April 2022–Present: Founded MIRAISOZAI Inc. to develop innovative new fabrics and yarns focused on high heat-shielding properties and superior comfort.

An Innovative Idea to Overcome the Drawbacks of Synthetic Fibers

A texture that doesn't look sporty, even with enhanced functionality
Matsui founded MIRAISOZAI Inc. driven by a pressing concern: the gradual loss of technology from Japan's outstanding textile factories. In the fashion industry, synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon have been prized for their specific functions, primarily in sportswear. However, a common drawback was the distinct sheen that appeared when these functions were added.
"Our goal was to achieve a natural texture and feel, much like premium cotton, while still delivering high performance," Matsui explains. "We've been on a quest for a material that integrates effortlessly into daily fashion."
Achieving this ambitious goal demanded a fresh approach, one untethered from conventional manufacturing methods. It called for highly advanced technology capable of unlocking the full functional potential of synthetic fibers while conquering their long-standing textural weaknesses.

The Key to "AIR✕AIR's" Creation

The journey to "AIR✕AIR" began by exploring the potential of hollow fiber yarns. That's why the pathways for air are key to its performance.
"There's a phenomenon known as the 'air block effect,'" Matsui says. "By creating a multitude of air layers within the fibers, we can achieve significant heat-shielding and UV-blocking properties. It's like how you don't feel the heat between your palms until they're extremely close. By combining the air block principle with the effect of ceramics, we've enhanced its heat-blocking function."
"AIR✕AIR" was inspired by this air block effect. But the question remains: even with air trapped inside the fibers, are the benefits truly noticeable?

Data-Backed Performance: Superior UV Protection and Quick-Drying Properties

The superior performance of "AIR✕AIR" is certified by a third-party institution
The performance of 'AIR✕AIR' isn't just a matter of opinion; it's backed by hard data, proven through rigorous testing by third-party organizations. So, what are the effects of a T-shirt made with 'AIR✕AIR'?
"It boasts four key features: heat shielding, UV protection, quick-drying capabilities, and a smooth feel.
In heat-shielding tests, it achieved an S45 rating, which means it has a heat-shielding effect between 45% and 55%.
What's particularly outstanding is that even a white T-shirt achieved a 'UPF 50' rating, the highest rank in the Ultraviolet Protection Factor index. Combined with its potent heat-shielding properties, this demonstrates its extremely high performance in protecting the skin from strong summer sunlight.
Furthermore, in water-absorption and quick-drying tests, we found that the fabric dries quickly due to its numerous air pockets and low thread density. The short time it takes to go from wet to dry directly translates to maintaining comfort, even in the sweatiest seasons.
On top of that, its cotton-like texture provides a lasting feeling of dryness. This, combined with the cooling effect from moisture evaporation, allowed us to achieve an even higher level of comfort."
A key feature is that these functions stem from the yarn's inherent structure, not from any surface treatment. This means the performance won't degrade easily, even after repeated washing.

Patent-Pending for Its Unique Yarn and Fabric Structure

The high functionality of 'AIR✕AIR' lies in its yarn structure. The reason for filing for a patent was crystal clear.
"Looking at the features of 'AIR✕AIR,' you might think it’s just another material designed for summer comfort. And it's true that the fibers are infused with ceramics and jade, providing excellent contact cooling and heat dissipation. But these technologies are becoming quite common.
The superiority of our 'AIR✕AIR' lies in its unique structure, which creates air pockets by combining yarns with various specialized cross-sections. Since the functionality is built into the structure, we can deliver semi-permanent benefits without sacrificing the fabric's natural feel."
The patent for 'AIR✕AIR' lies in its unique combination of yarns with specialized cross-sections.
This versatility allows 'AIR✕AIR' to be used not only in sportswear but also in high-fashion items, creating a framework that can flexibly adapt to client demands.

More Than Just a Material Supplier: A Future of Co-Creation with Factories and Brands

The company isn't just selling 'AIR✕AIR' as a raw material; it aims to co-create with the apparel brands that use it. Matsui emphasizes the importance of deeply understanding a brand's challenges and vision, working as partners to create new value together.
"We don’t see ourselves as a mere material maker. We are a platform that connects highly skilled artisans and factories with up-and-coming designers and brands. Our crucial role is to unlock the full potential of Japanese manufacturing and contribute to the future of the fashion industry.
To that end, we want to create a place like a school in the future. We believe that passing on knowledge and sharing the joy of material development is a step toward developing better products and, ultimately, a sustainable society."
One example of this is a collaboration with a Chinese denim manufacturer. By applying 'AIR✕AIR' to address the traditional challenges of cotton denim, such as its "heaviness" and "slow drying time," they developed a new denim fabric that is lightweight, quick-drying, and boasts stretch properties.
One of the key missions for 'AIR✕AIR' is to take this Japanese technological prowess global. With an eye on Asian market expansion, the company is set to establish a firm in China in 2025 to sell its yarn.

Sustainability Means "Being Loved for a Long Time"

The key is creating timeless, basic items that aren't swayed by trends.
In today's fashion scene, sustainability is a hot topic you can't ignore. The company champions a unique perspective: true sustainability isn't just about using recycled materials. It's about crafting superior products that people will cherish and use for years to come.
'AIR✕AIR' is built to last, thanks to its exceptional durability and resistance to functional decline from washing. As a result, it cuts down on frequent replacements, which is a major win for reducing waste.
Naturally, creating compelling products is key, and the company also aims to become a platform that facilitates just that. Rather than chasing fleeting trends, their focus is on delivering lasting value. This very philosophy is woven into the design of 'AIR✕AIR'.
Behind the company's mission to 'change the world with a single piece of fabric' lies a blend of tradition, innovation, and a clear vision for the future. 'AIR✕AIR', born from the groundbreaking concept of focusing on an air layer, is a powerful statement from Japanese craftsmanship to the world. Its ongoing evolution is set to continually push the boundaries of what's possible in fashion.
