Not Yet in Japan: Southern French Maison CHABAUD Captures Innocence and Elegance with Its Iconic ‘Scent of Milk
Since its founding in 2002, the fragrance maison CHABAUD has been quietly sharing its scents from Montpellier in the South of France. This maison, born from founder Sophie Chabaud’s memories of the garden where she spent her childhood, embarked on a new chapter in 2013 when current director Mattia Bono came on board. The brand carves out a unique presence by approaching scent as an art form that weaves together "emotions" and "memories."
Among its collections, the "milk" series, which captures nostalgia and a pure heart through fragrance, is cherished worldwide as an icon symbolizing the brand. We spoke with Mattia himself to learn about the creative background of this series and his aesthetic philosophy, summed up in his belief that "fragrance is poetry."
PROFILE

Mattia Bono
CHABAUD Co-founder / Brand Director
Born in Italy. While traveling in the South of France, he discovered CHABAUD's fragrances and was instantly captivated by their world. He joined the brand’s development in 2013, guiding the maison to new heights with his unique philosophy that emphasizes art and poetry.
Unlocking the Doors of Memory: An Encounter with a Single Scent
In the gentle light of Montpellier, a single room fragrance stirred the soul of a young traveler. In 2012, Mattia had a chance encounter with CHABAUD during his travels, first experiencing its scents as a customer. "I was blown away by the 'emotional precision' of the home fragrance, and its quiet elegance immediately captivated my heart," he recalls. It was a moving experience, like gently opening a door to his memories.
"In that moment, I was reminded of the profound power of scent. Emotions, memories, the very atmosphere of a space—fragrance connects all these invisible elements."

Following his intuition, just one year later, he resolved to become a part of the brand’s new chapter.
Mattia, resonating deeply with the world Sophie had created, joined the brand’s expansion. As a result, in 2013, CHABAUD opened a new chapter as a fragrance maison. Since then, CHABAUD has continued to create elegant and evocative fragrances that connect memory and art.
The "Memory of Milk": Evoking Innocence and Nostalgia
Among its many collections, the "milk" series, themed around dairy, holds a particularly distinctive presence.
Scents like "Lait concentré," "Lait de Vanille," and "Lait et Chocolat" are tinged with nostalgia; they are sweet yet imbued with a calming serenity.
"With this series, we wanted to bottle the innocent feelings of childhood, nostalgia, and a sense of peace," he explains.
However, gourmand (delicious-smelling) fragrances can easily become overly sweet if the balance is even slightly off. "Maintaining the sweetness without losing elegance—that was our biggest challenge," says Mattia. This "memory of milk," born from trial and error, has now become an icon of CHABAUD and a symbol of the brand's emotional depth.
This depth can also be seen in the brand's suggestion of "layering" scents. CHABAUD proposes the joy of weaving your own story by layering fragrances, with combinations that are endlessly versatile and adaptable to the season or your mood.
For example, combining "Innocente Fragilité" with "Fleur de Figuier" creates a summery impression where purity and the juicy freshness of fruit intersect. When you layer "Lait et Chocolat" over "Mysterious Oud," a soft sweetness rises from within the bitter wood notes, creating a complex and sensual expression.
As Mattia says, "Fragrance is like a tapestry for weaving emotions and memories." The scents you choose, the scents you layer—every one of them becomes a piece that tells "your own story."

Small in Size, Strong in Spirit: The Quietly Unfolding World of Chabaud
The minimalist, classic bottle is meticulously designed as a canvas to accentuate the unique character of each fragrance."The pure white packaging is a canvas reflecting the light and purity of the Mediterranean. We wanted the scent and its name to be the only stars of the show."
It is within this refined simplicity that the unique, luxurious aesthetic of Chabaud truly comes alive.
While the brand has been expanding across Europe, with France at its heart, the journey hasn't been entirely smooth. Conveying the brand's universe across borders requires a delicate approach to navigate cultural differences.
"The answer we found wasn't in the scale of our operation, but in the clarity of our philosophy and our human connections. In other words, it’s about being a brand that is 'small, yet strong at its core.'"
True to these words, he has nurtured Chabaud's global presence by carefully forging relationships only with partners who deeply understand and resonate with the brand's DNA. The brand’s unwavering commitment to craftsmanship, supported by French artisans, is another pillar that supports its 'core.'
A New Chapter: From Fragrance to Lifestyle
And now, a new fragrance quietly awaits its debut. The upcoming release is set to be a fresh interpretation of the gourmand notes Chabaud is celebrated for. Described as an ambitious creation he hopes will be 'a scent that is like a poem,' it is poised to mark the brand’s next chapter.
Furthermore, Mattia's vision extends beyond the realm of fragrance, venturing into the broader domain of 'lifestyle.'
"Moving forward, we aim to evolve into a brand that, while anchored in fragrance, also speaks to fashion, culture, and all five senses."
The brand is also exploring new partnerships for its launch in Japan, its journey quietly yet surely expanding across the globe. A fragrance is only truly complete when it intertwines with someone's memory. With this firm belief, Maison Chabaud continues to deliver scents that gently accompany each individual's personal story.
