Warm & Easy to Put on! "D.Trace," the Next Generation Winter Boot that Capitalizes on Descente's Technological Prowess
In the morning, as I look out the window, I see a light dusting of snow on the ground. On such days, I want to have warm, non-slip winter boots ready to go. However, it's often the case that this type of boot comes in round designs that are hard to match with my outfit.
While incorporating advanced technology honed in ski wear development and the excellent functionality of Vibram soles, it also features a smart form and minimal design that harmonize with today's styling trends.
A representative involved in the development from Descente shares insights on the hidden capabilities behind its sleek appearance.

A New Series of Winter Boots Combining Brand Wisdom

When you think of Descente, the down jackets from "DESCENTE ALLTERRAIN" often come to mind. However, they also produce winter boots.
Yes, we started offering winter boots in the autumn-winter season of 2020. Among them, the "D.Trace" series, which debuted last year, is a proud product infused with Descente's ski brand technology. The brand name combines the initial of Descente, "D," and "Trace" from English.
Could you tell us about the origin of its creation?
When we extracted user voices for developing new winter boots, many expressed that "the designs are clumsy and don’t match everyday outfits."Indeed, previous winter boots have often emphasized functionality, leading to clunky designs. Hence, we decided to develop winter boots that would work well in both snowy mountains and urban settings.
Streamlined & Minimal Design Matches a Wide Range of Outfits

They truly look stylish. They seem to pair well with suits and tailored pants.
Let's take the representative model of the series, "DTRACE LU HI AGAT," as an example.Winter boots generally have round forms, but this model features an elongated nose, resulting in a refined appearance. Thanks to its minimal design that strips away unnecessary embellishments, it can be easily paired with various outfits.
Moreover, the all-black or gray color schemes not only enhance an urban image but also offer practical benefits by concealing dirt from snow.

With a slimmer design, isn't it harder to put on and take off?
In Japan, where we typically remove shoes upon entering homes, ease of wearability is one of the crucial functions of footwear. Accordingly, the high-cut models feature a zip on the side. Additionally, we've adopted an original shoelace system using elastic cords, eliminating the need for tying laces. The cord at the heel is designed to assist with putting on and taking off.
The upper mimics leather, exuding a sophisticated vibe.
We've utilized an original microfiber synthetic leather for the upper. Of course, it's designed to be waterproof and breathable, handling snow and rain with ease. Although it’s not completely waterproof, tests have confirmed that it maintains waterproof effectiveness even after two hours submerged in 5cm deep water. It's well-equipped for snowy mountain conditions.
Equipped with an Outsole Co-developed with Vibram
In terms of versatility and functionality, these boots truly cater to all needs. Could you provide details about the outsole?
The outsole is the lifeblood of winter boots. We chose the Italian company Vibram as our partner. In particular, there are few companies with the technology and rich know-how in the outdoor footwear sector that match Vibram's level. The co-developed outsole is based on "Arctic Grip A.T.," which boasts top-notch grip.

Arctic Grip rubber is a high-performance compound designed to firmly grip surfaces even on wet ice, thanks to its low-temperature adaptability and ultra-fine surface textures. It performs effectively without hardening down to -20℃.
Moreover, by adopting "XS Trek Evo" for the outsole, it provides strong grip on various surfaces unaffected by humidity.
The pattern employs a "Traction Lug" design with finely arranged lugs on the sole, ensuring excellent stability.

I tried wearing them, and my feet stop perfectly! Also, it somehow feels warm inside the shoes...
The areas in contact with the skin utilize "Heat Navi" developed by Descente. This is a heat-retaining insulation material that converts almost all wavelengths of light, including infrared from sunlight, into heat. Additionally, the insole surface is made with a heat-retaining material called "Vercera," enhancing cold resistance.
The cushioning is also excellent.
The insoles are equipped with "Ortholite," which excels in cushioning and durability. It fits snugly against the foot’s surface, enhancing heel stability and providing a smooth walking experience by effectively transferring power. Its excellent breathability prevents moisture buildup, and its antibacterial properties help prevent odor generation.
There are a variety of design options.
We offer simple boots without shoelaces and mid-cut versions that can be worn like sneakers. Among them, "DTRACE MC HI AGAT" is made with natural leather that has been treated for water resistance.Who do you want to wear "D.Trace"?
Historically, the users of Descente's winter boots have primarily been those living in heavy snowfall areas like Hokkaido. However, I believe this model holds greater potential.I hope people living in urban areas outside of the snowy regions will use these as boots for outings on winter rainy days or cold days. I think this shoe possesses the design and functionality to deliver that kind of potential.
Its range of use spans from snowy mountains to city streets. Like an outstanding SUV, "D.Trace" robustly conquers all paths, regardless of location or weather.
