Once Again, Dyson Has Shattered the Norms of Hair Dryers! A Comprehensive Look at the Latest Model, "Dyson Airstrait™ straightener"
With innovative ideas and exceptional development capabilities, Dyson has introduced a series of home appliances that make people's lives more convenient and enriching. The company, which has revolutionized various appliances including vacuum cleaners, fans, and hair dryers, released its latest dryer, "Dyson Airstrait™ straightener," this year. This product cleverly utilizes a shape reminiscent of a hair iron to dry hair while simultaneously achieving a natural straight hairstyle.
Given its appearance, it undoubtedly promises a unique experience, but what specific features are embedded within it?
We spoke with a Dyson spokesperson about the Company's history and their journey, as well as the technology and development behind the "Dyson Airstrait™ straightener."
Pioneering Evolution in Home Appliances: Dyson
Dyson's history began in 1993 in the UK. The founder, Sir James Dyson, who continues to serve as Chief Engineer, questioned the usability of existing vacuum cleaners, leading him to invent a bagless cyclone vacuum cleaner. However, because his revolutionary idea was ahead of its time, he struggled to find a company interested in it. Deciding to forge his own path, he founded Dyson Limited.
Since then, the cyclone vacuum cleaner has become a global bestseller, solidifying Dyson's reputation in the home appliance industry.

In 2016, Dyson entered the beauty appliance market with the introduction of the "Dyson Supersonic™ Hair Dryer." Many were surprised by its distinctive design featuring a prominent hole in the center, which challenged the traditional image of hair dryers and sparked curiosity.
At that time, James noted that "there had been no innovation in the hair dryer industry for over 60 years." Just as he recognized the inconveniences and inefficiencies of conventional hair dryers, Dyson quickly became a leading figure in the global beauty appliance market.

Since its inception, Dyson has placed significant emphasis on solving "overlooked problems" in everyday life through science and technology. The company focuses on rigorous research, analysis, and scientific backing to target various inconveniences—however unnoticed they may be—and has the technical prowess to solve those issues. This is the foundation of the revolution Dyson has initiated.
Is It a Hair Iron? The Immense Technological Prowess Condensed in the Latest Dryer
This year, Dyson has once again overturned the conventions of traditional hair dryers. The "Dyson Airstrait™ straightener" features two opposing plates, resembling a hair iron at first glance, leading one to hardly believe this is a dryer. The "Dyson Airstrait™ straightener" is a revolutionary dryer that dries hair while straightening it by using the plates to clamp the hair.

However, the question arises: "Can simply clamping the hair truly dry it?" and "Will the hair be damaged by directly clamping it with the plates?"
Dyson has addressed these concerns with its overwhelming technological capabilities.
One of the notable features of Dyson's dryers is their powerful airflow. This is made possible by the "Hyperdymium™ motor," which serves as the core of their hair care technology. Despite being compact and lightweight enough to fit in the handle, this powerful motor features a 13-blade impeller that rotates at high speed, generating a strong airflow by delivering a considerable amount of air. This allows it to dry hair using airflow while simultaneously straightening it.

Regarding potential damage to the hair, the "Dyson Airstrait™ straightener" does not utilize hot plates, thereby protecting hair from excessive heat damage. The secret lies in its "Intelligent Heat Control" feature.
This technology, also found in Dyson's other hair care products, utilizes sensors in the unit to detect the temperature of the emitted air, automatically regulating it to prevent overheating. By controlling the optimal airflow and temperature, it allows for styling with minimal damage.

Ideal for Those Who Easily Feel Heat on Their Scalp
The "Dyson Airstrait™ straightener" offers a "Wet Mode" for use on wet hair, a "Dry Mode" for dry hair, and a "Cool Mode" for setting styles. When hair is wet, the hydrogen bonds within the hair are naturally broken, making it easier to change the hair's shape. This mechanism allows for better control of hairstyles when styling hair after wetting it.

As a result, straightening dry hair might seem challenging, but how does the "Dry Mode" achieve straight hair? The answer lies in the "temperature."
Both the "Dry Mode" and "Wet Mode" feature three levels of temperature adjustment, tailored to each mode. This allows for straight hair tailored to various hair conditions and types. However, it does not reach higher temperatures than a traditional hair straightener, enabling users to select the optimal temperature for their hair type. For those with strong waves, it is recommended to slightly dampen the hair before styling for better results.
The temperatures for the "Dyson Airstrait™ straightener" released in Japan are set at 80/100/115℃ for "Wet Mode" and 90/105/Boost (max temperature) for "Dry Mode." Interestingly, these temperatures differ based on the hair characteristics of each country. For instance, the products released in the United States have been set at higher temperatures than those in Japan.
According to a survey conducted by Dyson, it was found that 1 in 5 Japanese individuals has concerns regarding scalp care, with many having fine hair and sensitive scalps that dislike hot hair dryers. Based on the survey results, it was determined that individuals with fine hair tend to feel heat on their scalp more easily, leading to a high demand for lower temperatures, prompting Dyson to focus on temperature control. This level of detailed consideration is likely one reason why Dyson products are trusted.
Additionally, Dyson emphasizes ergonomic product design and architecture that minimizes physical strain. What specific features does the "Dyson Airstrait™ straightener" incorporate?
For safety, the design reduces the risk of electric shock when clamping wet hair and minimizes the likelihood of burns around the face, which can occur with traditional hair straighteners. The design of the warm air exhaust is aimed at directing airflow at an angle to minimize the risk of burns to the neck and face, making it safe for users of all ages.

Dyson's Evolution Will Continue
The "Dyson Airstrait™ Straightener," created by consolidating Dyson's technology, seems to be receiving favorable reviews from users. Particularly praised are its innovative ability to "straighten while drying," which was previously uncommon, and its convenience to "be used on wet hair," something challenging for conventional hair straighteners. Moreover, by straightening hair before bed, users can reduce preparation time in the morning, and many have provided feedback that finishing with "Dry Mode" results in naturally shiny straight hair. It seems poised to be a strong ally for busy mornings.
In 2023, Dyson announced a £500 million investment in the beauty and haircare sector, stating it would launch 20 new products over four years. Moreover, although not yet available in Japan, Dyson also introduced its first hair styling product this year. One cannot help but keep an eye on Dyson’s developments for more exciting surprises ahead.
