Heisei Gyaru, Namie Amuro, and From Mother to Daughter: How ESPERANZA Keeps the Light of "Hope" Alive at Our Feet
From 1995 to the early 2000s, the streets were taken over by "gyaru," celebrating their freedom of self-expression. Their ultimate accessory? The "platform shoe," the very symbol of the culture. In the midst of this craze, one shoe brand consistently captured the moment with positive, alluring designs: ESPERANZA. From the Heisei to the Reiwa era, its appeal has cut across generations and remains as timeless as ever.
So why does ESPERANZA continue to be so beloved? To explore the source of its charm and its vision for the future, we sat down with Kengo Fujiwara from public relations and Noka Maeda from the retail front lines. They shared the philosophy woven into the brand, from its founder's vision to how it connects with Gen Z.
The Vision of "Hope" at Your Feet: The Meaning Behind the Name ESPERANZA
For many, the name ESPERANZA instantly brings SHIBUYA109 to mind. The brand is that deeply intertwined with street culture, a true icon of Heisei gyaru footwear. But its history stretches back much further. ESPERANZA was born from its parent company, Kobe Leather Cloth Co., Ltd., which is celebrating its 77th anniversary this year. While the company initially focused on manufacturing and wholesaling footwear, it launched its first retail store in 1966, "Ginza Esperanza." This marked the true beginning of the ESPERANZA brand we know today.

“That was during Japan's period of high economic growth, a time when new values and lifestyles were sweeping through society. With the rise of movements like women's liberation, women's social standing was on the rise. I believe our senior employees took great pride in the fact that ESPERANZA wasn't just a shoe brand, but was providing real social value. We were supporting the \"feet\" of women stepping out into the world with new freedom and confidence,” says Fujiwara.
Born in the beautiful port city of Kobe, ESPERANZA has long captured the pulse of the \"now,\" starting from women's feet. Its name, which means "hope" in Spanish, encapsulates the brand's founding wish: “to always walk alongside women, supporting their every step as they move forward with positivity and their own unique style.”

Furthermore, the vision set by the founder is \"FUN.\" Grounded in the belief that \"the woman is the main character,\" the brand prioritized creating lightweight shoes that inspire you to take that first step.
The inspiration for ESPERANZA's designs comes from everyday life. Shoes that seamlessly fit into real-life scenes—commuting, class, girls' nights out, and dates—are at the heart of the brand.
“The \"Raku-Mori\" series, which combines comfort with style, is a perfect example. While the heels are high, they're surprisingly easy to walk in. We want customers to love them as \"moreru\"—or \"glam-up\"—shoes that are both comfortable and make your legs look stunning. More recently, our \"Kyun Fit Sneaker\" has become a hit, perfect for attending concerts or for 'oshikatsu' (fan activities). Their main draw is the meticulous design, brought to life by a development team of footwear professionals,” explains Fujiwara.
Namie Amuro, the Trendsetter: The "Platform Shoe" Boom That Became a Social Phenomenon
From the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, ESPERANZA, a pioneer in platform shoes, took the era by storm alongside gyaru culture. Ignited by fashion icons like Namie Amuro and Ayumi Hamasaki, platform shoes became the signature look on the streets of Shibuya.
“From the mid-1990s to the 2000s, ESPERANZA became widely known for spearheading the \"platform\" boom with gyaru fashion. Then, around 2010, as gyaru culture began to fade, fashion trends shifted toward more feminine and minimalist high-fashion styles. Now, in the 2020s, there's a huge emphasis on comfort, and ESPERANZA has evolved to meet the needs of modern women by focusing on functionality more than ever before,” says Fujiwara.
“The mid-90s was a time when all of SHIBUYA109 was buzzing, but the impact of Namie Amuro wearing ESPERANZA's platform boots was massive,” Maeda recalls. “At the time, our company had its own leather factory. When Amuro wore a pair of our 13cm-heel black platform long boots made there, we were flooded with attention. Later, stretch-fabric long boots became the next big trend, and she wore those as well, causing them to sell out instantly.”

Thanks in part to the influence of stars who defined the era, the brand skyrocketed in popularity. As trends evolved, ESPERANZA grew into a brand cherished across generations. According to Maeda, the secret lies in its "relationship with its customers."
"Many in Gen Z recognize ESPERANZA as ‘the brand their mothers used to wear,’ and we often see mothers and daughters shopping together in our stores. I believe that the trust and confidence in our quality have been passed down through the generations, along with the cherished memories of our customers' youth," says Maeda.

Time and Passion in Every Pair
The ESPERANZA shoemaking process is a meticulous journey that takes about 10 months. From initial design sketches to crafting the shoe lasts, selecting materials, and engineering the heels, many steps are completed by hand. With an uncompromising approach to everything from material selection to manufacturing, and with careful attention paid to even the hidden details, the brand creates a distinct "difference" you can feel the moment you put on a pair.

Supporting this shoemaking process is a team of dedicated professionals.
"The ESPERANZA team is made up of shoemaking professionals. For example, we have modelists who create the shoe lasts from scratch, designers who conceive the fabrics and patterns, and specialists who engineer the heels and soles.
Additionally, our in-store sales staff who connect with customers and our marketers who build systems to provide lasting value to society are indispensable. Our ability to manage everything from planning and manufacturing to sales under one roof is a major strength. It allows us to leverage everyone's expertise to create shoes that are uniquely ESPERANZA," says Fujiwara.
It is this team structure that ensures the brand's signature platform shoes are more than just a fleeting trend.
"The 'ESPERANZA equals platform shoes' image is the result of years of style proposals and designs that captured the spirit of the times and won over many customers. For our designers, ESPERANZA's platforms aren't just about adding volume; they are a constantly evolving stage, a solid 'foundation' that supports the design of the upper.
The entire company has complete trust in our design team, which meticulously plans and develops shoes that stay on-trend while ensuring the balance between the upper and the sole creates a harmonious overall silhouette," says Fujiwara.

Future collections are set to explore new themes each season, such as "Feminine x Vintage" and "Marine x Romantic." The brand is evolving from a long-loved classic to a trendsetter, proposing shoes that go beyond platforms to complement every moment of daily life. This evolution never stops.
For days when you want to meet someone special. For days when you want to make your outfit pop. For ordinary days that could use a little spark of joy. ESPERANZA continues to light up the path for women, offering a pair of shoes that walks with them through all of life's moments.
