Can "Reapplying" Protect the Future of Your Skin? Key Points on UV Protection Shared by a Dermatologist & Beauty Nurse

2025.05.23
Many people worry about dark spots and wrinkles. While it’s widely understood that one of the causes is ultraviolet (UV) rays, how many people are thorough with their after-sun skincare (skincare after sun exposure) or consistently reapply sunscreen?
According to a survey on UV protection by Manavis Cosmetics, about half of dermatologists and beauty nurses answered that there is a "lack of after-sun care and reapplication of sunscreen."
This time, we interviewed Emiko Ohata and Ymiko Yutani from Manavis Cosmetics, and asked them about essential skincare habits for those troubled by spots and wrinkles.

90% of Dermatologists & Beauty Nurses Report "UV Damage is Serious"

Manavis Cosmetics conducted a survey of 1,073 dermatologists and beauty nurses on "aging care x UV rays." Regarding UV damage, approximately 90% responded that it is either "very serious (45.6%)" or "somewhat serious (45.0%)."
When asked, "What kind of skin damage is caused by UV rays?" the top three answers were spots, freckles, and wrinkles. Regarding these results, Yutani from Manavis Cosmetics commented:
"Dark spots and wrinkles are also among the top skin concerns of our customers. People of all ages worry about them.
"We regularly hold skincare seminars, and after listening to customers for many years, I feel that more people are taking measures against UV rays year-round.
"However, while many people apply sunscreen regardless of the season, I get the sense that a lot of them believe it's fine to apply it just once in the morning. Since UV rays are stronger from early spring to late autumn, I would like to see a proper habit of reapplying sunscreen, but honestly, this habit isn’t widespread yet."

Experts Stress the Importance of "Reapplying Sunscreen" & After-sun Care

The same survey revealed that nearly half of dermatologists and beauty nurses are concerned about "inadequate after-sun care after UV exposure," "not reapplying sunscreen thoroughly," and "not protecting themselves against UV rays throughout the year."
It seems more people now apply sunscreen year-round, but what’s the best approach to reapplication and after-sun care? We asked Ohata for her advice.
"Just because a sunscreen is SPF50++++ doesn’t mean you’re totally protected. The SPF value means one SPF can delay sunburn by about 10-15 minutes. So SPF30 protects you for about 300-450 minutes (5-7.5 hours), but sweat, sebum, or friction can cause sunscreen to wear away—so it’s important to make reapplication a habit.
"But since it’s difficult to redo your entire makeup from scratch, it’s practical to approach reapplication as a makeup touch-up. Spritzing a moisturizing mist over your makeup also helps with UV protection. After blotting away excess sweat or oil with a tissue, rehydrate with mist, then touch up makeup with a UV-blocking base product.
"After-sun care doesn’t end at toner—be sure to also use milk or cream to balance moisture.
"During UV season, people tend to neglect hydration, but skin exposed to UV rays actually loses moisture more easily. To use a food analogy, when you grill dried fish and fresh fish together, the dried fish cooks faster—your skin after sun exposure behaves similarly. That’s why it’s so vital to focus on hydration. If you don’t like rich creams in summer, switch to a lighter formula."
Medicated skincare masks
"If you’ve overexposed your skin to the sun, I recommend a whitening lotion mask, or using our bath-time product, 'Manavis Medicated Skin Mask,' in a thicker layer than usual.
"This product softens and removes unnecessary dead skin while recharging moisture. You can also use it on your décolleté, feet, or body—for full body after-sun care.
"People who regularly reapply sunscreen and practice after-sun care tend to show differences in common signs of aging, like dullness, spots, skin tone, wrinkles, sagging, and firmness as they age. Your daily routine shapes how your skin looks in the future—so keep that in mind."

Manavis' Commitment to In-House Production: Their Unique Manufacturing Philosophy

Not only the skin masks designed for use in the bath, but all of Manavis's products are developed by harnessing the power of nature. For example, the anti-inflammatory ingredient "Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate (licorice root-derived)," which has gained attention in recent years, has been included in all basic care products since the company was founded.
Regarding this, Yutani shares the following.
"At Manavis, our technical department participates in a variety of academic conferences to gather information and approach product development. We carefully select ingredients not just based on trends but grounded in evidence, tailoring them to each product’s purpose.
"Lately, as night-time skincare routines garner more attention, the importance of 'taking time to nurture both your skin and mind' is being recognized anew. In the aging-care series, we've added niacinamide as a wrinkle-targeting ingredient, and have also devoted special attention to scent so that users can truly enjoy their skincare routines.
"We use essential oils based on lavender extract and chamomile, and with each product we hope that users will be able to cherish those special moments at the start and end of each day for self-reflection."
She also highlighted that having an integrated system from manufacturing to sales is a major strength for Manavis.
"By carrying out everything from manufacturing to sales within our own group, we are able to create highly unique products. Since we don’t rely on intermediaries, we can keep logistics costs down and focus resources on research, development, and promotion.
"Another advantage is that customer feedback can be conveyed directly to our manufacturing department, allowing us to respond swiftly in the rare event a skin issue were to arise with our products."
When it comes to products for UV protection and aging care, Ohata explains that the user response has been significant.
"Regarding our sunscreen, since it’s a non-chemical formulation (not using UV absorbers), we’ve received feedback from people with relatively sensitive skin who say it’s easy to use, as well as from parents who want to use it with their children who say it’s very reassuring. Although it’s non-chemical, it provides effective UV cut, and we’ve received reviews saying it’s 'incredibly helpful.'
"Our aging-care items have also received great reviews, with comments like 'my skin is brighter' or 'I’ve noticed fewer wrinkles.' Many customers feel that thanks to improved skin condition, their complexion looks more radiant as it reflects light better."
At Manavis, which we visited for this interview, skincare education is also provided through seminars for customers. By consistently following up with sunscreen reapplication and after-sun care—both of which Manavis recommends—you may be able to make the most out of light to keep your skin looking beautiful.
