The Challenge of "Color Selection": A Hurdle for Online Purchases

When shopping for cosmetics like lipstick or foundation online, one of the biggest headaches is choosing the right color. It's tough to tell if a shade will suit you, because the color on the screen can differ from the real product, and the model's skin tone might not match your own.
While online shopping has become a part of our daily routine, the fear of "making the wrong choice" is ever-present. Many of us spend hours scrolling through social media for reviews and testimonials, holding off on a purchase until we're completely sure. Yet, no matter how much research you do, the only way to truly know if a product is right for you is to try it on.
In this landscape, the luxury sector faces a unique challenge: delivering a "consistently high level of service" that also feels "exclusive and personal." As consumers become increasingly digital-savvy, luxury brands must adapt by creating digital services that masterfully blend this sense of exclusivity with personalization.
The priority for this project was to create a "best-in-class virtual try-on experience." The challenge wasn't just about the technology itself, but about infusing the brand's unique DNA into every user interaction.
While several companies offer virtual try-on technology, Perfect Corp. was chosen for its key ability to deliver "exclusive, unparalleled quality." Additionally, Louis Vuitton meticulously designed and managed the customer journey, ensuring the final experience was "seamless and incredibly user-friendly."
The Face Analyzer That Works in an Instant

One of the key experiential elements of this project is Perfect Corp.'s "Face Analyzer." In the realm of AI-powered lip color recommendations, the exact method for how these suggestions are determined is considered a brand trade secret.
When users frame their face with their device's camera, the AI instantly analyzes not only color data—such as skin tone, eye color, hair color, and natural lip shade—but also structural features like the position and shape of facial parts.
What's remarkable about this technology is its ability to analyze skin color beyond just lightness or darkness, identifying the precise undertones. This allows for the automation of personal color analysis with an accuracy rivaling that of an experienced beauty advisor.
No-Fail Suggestions for Adventurous Shades
Once the Face Analyzer digitizes the user's facial features, the AI presents several recommendations. The system works by having the AI cross-reference the analyzed data—skin, hair, and eye color—with the brand's extensive database of lip colors. It then selects shades that harmonize with the user's natural coloring to best enhance their complexion.
When we choose colors, we tend to gravitate toward our established preferences. Meanwhile, beauty advisors can often be influenced by current trends or sales targets. However, AI-driven recommendations are based on objective, personal data, free from emotional bias, resulting in consistent and reliable suggestions.
This helps users discover colors they might never have chosen for themselves but are, in fact, incredibly flattering. For users who typically stick to safe, conventional shades, the AI provides an opportunity to discover a new side of themselves by suggesting vibrant or deep colors backed by objective evidence.
Of course, users can also request multiple options tailored to their personal preferences or a specific look they want to achieve. Since the options are pre-filtered to ensure they harmonize with the user's features, you can choose any of them with the confidence that it won't be a major miss. This is the ultimate solution for "no-fail shopping" in the digital age.
Lifelike Virtual Textures
No matter how amazing the personalized color suggestions are, if the lipstick texture rendered on-screen looks cheap, the desire to buy will plummet. For this project, Perfect Corp. paid meticulous attention to rendering realistic "textures" in the virtual try-on experience. Lipsticks come in various finishes, such as matte, satin, sheer, and gloss. Perfect Corp.'s advanced AR technology is used to realistically recreate these finishes—not just as flat colors, but by simulating how light reflects off them and how they apply to the lips.
Detailed texture mapping simulates changes in sheen as the user moves their face and even how the color settles into the vertical lines of the lips. This allows users to examine a detailed product image, much like using a physical tester in a store.
Furthermore, this high-quality virtual try-on experience is deployed not only on the brand's official website but also on in-store tablets and even within apps on social platforms like WeChat, ensuring maximum user convenience.
In stores, customers can try items at their own pace without waiting for staff, even during peak hours. For those hesitant to apply physical testers for hygiene reasons, the virtual try-on serves as an effective alternative.
This creates a seamless shopping journey, allowing customers to leisurely try on shades at home before making a final decision in-store, or to try a color in-store and purchase a favorite one online later.
Toward a Future of Beautifying Yourself with Confidence
The introduction of AI-powered personalization and high-definition virtual try-ons does more than just enhance convenience; it powerfully resonates with consumer psychology. Most importantly, the AI's objective analysis and the realistic try-on experience have been a game-changer in alleviating common consumer anxieties like, "I don't know what colors suit me" and "I don't want to regret my purchase." Products bought with the conviction that "this color looks great on me" lead to higher customer satisfaction and, in turn, boost brand loyalty. The fusion of personable, human-centric service in-store and precise digital analysis online is giving rise to an unprecedented new luxury experience.
In the future, this technology will undoubtedly evolve further, expanding into personalized experiences across a broader range of categories beyond makeup, including fashion and jewelry. As a tool that helps consumers not only to "avoid mistakes" but also to "discover a new self," the importance of AI and virtual try-ons will only continue to grow.
