Formulated with Botulinum Toxin-Derived Ingredients! Réveiller The Eye. — An Eye Cream Born From Aesthetic Medicine Expertise
Concerns around the eye area, such as wrinkles and dark circles, significantly affect the overall impression of your face. While aesthetic medicine now offers a variety of treatment options, the skin around the eyes remains extremely thin and delicate, easily influenced by underlying muscle and fat structure.
Developed by Dr. Eri Uehara, Director of the aesthetic clinic "THE ONE.", "réveiller The Eye." is an eye cream created specifically to address the unique challenges of eye care. How was her medical expertise incorporated into daily at-home care? We spoke with her about the background behind its development and her meticulous approach to ingredient formulation.
Bringing Aesthetic Medicine Expertise into Home Care
As a cosmetic surgeon who has addressed countless skin concerns, what led you to develop skincare products?
There are many products on the market touting the benefits of trendy ingredients, but I was long bothered by how some fail to fully maximize those ingredients due to poor penetration or insufficient dosage. Additionally, some ingredients lack solid scientific evidence. As a cosmetic surgeon, I believed I could leverage my knowledge of skin structure and ingredient functionality to create skincare that reliably delivers essential ingredients deep into the stratum corneum. Because it is also important that these are products I personally want to use, I am extremely selective about ingredient selection and formulation dosage.Among your lineup, today we are focusing on "réveiller The Eye." Botulinum toxin-derived ingredients are sometimes referred to as "topical Botox." Could you explain what kind of ingredient this is?
Botsu-peptide isn't the exact same botulinum toxin formulation used in medical aesthetic procedures, but rather a cosmetic ingredient that combines a portion of botulinum toxin with a peptide. Botox injections used in aesthetic medicine work by temporarily suppressing muscle movement to target expression lines. On the other hand, the botulinum toxin-derived peptide used in cosmetics applies this concept as a skincare ingredient focused on eye area firmness and overall appearance. What is the advantage of using cosmetics rather than fast-acting Botox injections?
Actually, Botox injections under the eyes require particularly careful consideration compared to other facial areas. Around the eyes lies the orbicularis oculi muscle, which controls closing the eyes and blinking. If this muscle weakens, sagging and dark circles under the eyes can become more noticeable. Therefore, administering Botox injections can suppress muscle activity, which in some cases actually accentuates dark circles.
Does this mean Botox isn't suitable as a solution for wrinkles around the eyes?
It means we need to carefully assess each patient's muscle and skin condition to determine eligibility and injection techniques. However, I realized that even for areas that are difficult to target with injections, incorporating ingredients gently through cosmetics could help condition the skin around the eyes while supporting firmness. That’s how I came up with the idea of an eye cream that can be seamlessly built into a daily routine. Are there any safety concerns regarding the use of botulinum toxin-derived ingredients in cosmetic products?
Given the name of the ingredient, some people might wonder, "Is it really safe to include an ingredient used in cosmetic medicine in daily skincare?" However, this ingredient was specifically developed for cosmetic use—not as a pharmaceutical drug—and its safety has been thoroughly verified, so you can use it with total peace of mind."MTD Technology" Delivering Ingredients to the Stratum Corneum
How does it differ from the botulinum toxin formulations used in medical aesthetic procedures?
Compared to injections that act directly, the changes appear more gradually. However, through liposomal encapsulation, it is designed so that the ingredients penetrate easily just by applying it to the skin.Another key highlight is that this botu-peptide is formulated at a high concentration of 2 ppm. Products containing this level of concentration are rare even on a global scale.
You've adopted a technology called "MTD" to help ingredients penetrate the skin. What kind of technology is this?
It is a skin-delivery penetration support technology patented in five countries, designed to deliver target ingredients deep into the stratum corneum. In "réveiller The Eye.", we adopted a formulation that binds MTD peptides with botulinum toxin-derived ingredients to effectively deliver them into the stratum corneum.Carefully Selected Supporting Ingredients and Safety from a Physician's Perspective
As a physician, your commitment to choosing ingredients based on evidence and efficacy feels like a major strength. Besides the botu-peptide, the product contains multiple functional peptides and beauty ingredients. What roles do these play?
The skin around the eyes is exceptionally thin and prone to changes such as dryness and loss of firmness. Since the dark shadows that concern many people in eye care are often linked to dullness caused by dryness, a formulation is needed that delivers hydration while catering to delicate eye areas. To keep the skin around the eyes healthy and balanced, this eye cream combines a total of 12 functional peptides. We also included key beauty ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and panthenol. Beyond simply providing moisture with hydrating agents, incorporating supporting ingredients like peptides helps lead to supple, firm-looking eyes and conditions the skin. Based on exhaustive research, we sourced carefully selected raw materials and generously packed them into this formula.
When is the best time to use it?
It can be used either morning or night—whichever fits your routine. We designed it so it can be effortlessly integrated into daily at-home care. Also, in July, we updated the applicator head to metal to enhance skin comfort. Some users apply it with their fingers, while others apply it directly using the head.
The applicator head fits nicely into the delicate contours around the eyes, making it very easy to use. Also, after using it for a few weeks, I began to notice a gradual change in the appearance of my eye area.
We want to keep making improvements so that it suits a wide variety of usage scenarios. I would be thrilled if people could easily incorporate the insights gained from medical aesthetics and a thoroughly vetted ingredient formulation into their daily routine. While options in cosmetic medicine continue to expand, delicate areas like the eyes can also benefit from approaches unique to daily skincare. "réveiller The Eye." translates a doctor's clinical experience addressing eye concerns into everyday skincare. Rather than relying solely on procedures, it elevates the time you spend caring for your skin. That is the new approach to eye care proposed by this eye cream.
