Focusing on the Globally Adored Canadian-Born Winter Boots Brand "CARIBOU™" from "SOREL"

2024.10.30
When it comes to winter boots that allow you to comfortably spend time in cold regions, isn't "SOREL's "CARIBOU™" the pioneer?
SOREL is well-known for winter boots, and its products even served as the uniform for the Canadian freestyle skiing team at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.
This time, I spoke with Keiko Kamohara from Columbia Sportswear Japan, who is in charge of SOREL merchandising, about the brand's roots, CARIBOU™, and some recommended items from SOREL.
“SOREL started in 1962 as a brand of Kaufman, a company making rubber boots in Ontario, Canada. It is said that SOREL was the first to attach a removable 'inner boot' to rubber boots, which led to the birth of CARIBOU™.”

The Epitome of SOREL: CARIBOU™

Let's delve into the details of SOREL's epitome, CARIBOU™. With a design that has hardly changed in over half a century, it surely contains specifications deserving of the term masterpiece.
"CARIBOU™ has not changed much since its birth in the 1960s. One of its features is the design that has been beloved for many years.
"In terms of details, the rubber part at the toe is called the 'shell,' and on the seam where the shell and nubuck are sewn together, a cement-based coating is applied to prevent water from seeping through the seam. This technique is known as 'gunking,' and it is a rare technology that few brands are capable of using.
"The nubuck used is also waterproofed, and the product itself is embossed with the word 'WATERPROOF.' The removable inner boot I mentioned earlier is made of felt, 9mm thick, and provides warmth even in cold areas.
"Moreover, this inner boot is sold separately, allowing users to replace just the inner part for many years of use. In fact, we frequently hear from users who have enjoyed using the boots for many years by replacing the inner boots.
"The outsole is also originally crafted to have a shape that efficiently sheds snow. SOREL's representative CARIBOU™ is packed with details and functions developed for people living in snow-heavy regions of Canada."

Models that Evolve While Inheriting Roots

Several items exist within SOREL that inherit the roots of CARIBOU™. Here are some recommended items from that selection.
"I would like to introduce the model 'BUXTON™ LACE BOOT WP,' which retains SOREL's intricate craftsmanship and leather use, suitable for both snowy roads and urban wear.
"This model can be used as a winter daily wear item just like CARIBOU™, but its approach to construction differs, utilizing an inner membrane[1] for waterproof functionality. Inside, there is 200g of insulation, and the fleece liner blocks cold air from the bottom up, keeping your feet warm.
"This model has become particularly popular among discerning Japanese customers."

Even Lighter Models for Everyday Use

Let’s introduce one more model. This item is lighter than the models introduced earlier and is recommended not only for winter but also for everyday use.
"It is the 'SCOUT 87™ PRO BOOT PLUS WP' model, a practical design that features a membrane waterproof specification, made with water-resistant suede and leather. The shell has been made lighter by using leather instead of rubber.
"This model is actually an homage to the shell and sole design from the time when SOREL collaborated with professional skateboarder and snowboarder Scott Downey in the 1970s to create the first snowboard boots in SOREL's history.
"While the design source is from the past, the midsole has been upgraded with thicker EVA material for enhanced cushioning. I believe this is a model that conveys the richness of SOREL's heritage along with the latest technology."

SOREL has established a solid position as a shoe brand. Its iconic CARIBOU™ is available not only for men but also for women and kids, making it a brand to watch for its future developments. It caters to everyday shoe needs for those living in snowy regions like Hokkaido, as well as practical shoes for ski resort employees and fashionable shoes for adults who enjoy various outdoor activities.
This winter, why not enjoy warmth in your feet with SOREL shoes?

[1]membrane:
A membrane material placed between layers of functional nylon fabric, such as a three-layer material. It prevents the ingress of water droplets while allowing water vapor to escape outside.
