Since its launch in 1992, the men's beauty brand uno has been a steadfast champion for men, helping them unlock their charm. In the spring of 2024, the brand launched the 4D All-in-One Shampoo, a hair care product with a new philosophy that addresses both present and future hair concerns.
We sat down with Akasaka from Fine Today Co., Ltd., the powerhouse behind uno, to dive into the hair care challenges facing modern men and unpack uno's groundbreaking approach for those who want to 'look great even 10 years from now.'

Uno's Philosophy: Evolving with the Times
As a long-standing leader in the men's beauty market, uno has seen its brand philosophy undergo a major transformation to keep pace with the times.
"Back in 1992, it was an era where 'men work as hard as they can to contribute to the company.' uno was born when men were expected to be at the top of their game in everything. The brand name, derived from the Italian word for '1,' championed a 'Number 1-oriented' mindset, aiming to guide men to become the epitome of cool, in line with the trends of the time.
However, as times changed, this 'Number 1' mentality faded. The last five or six years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, gave people more time for self-reflection, shifting the focus to 'shining in one's own unique way.'
uno has embraced this societal shift, pivoting to an 'Only 1-oriented' philosophy, where every individual can shine comfortably as their authentic self. We aspire to be a brand where everyone can easily and genuinely enjoy a transformative experience that changes their outlook."
Having shifted its course toward an 'Only 1-oriented' mindset, uno's new commercial for the '4D All-in-One Shampoo' is set in a fictional 'salon de uno.' It broadcasts a message that resonates with the values of today's men. The cast features longtime uno brand ambassador Kento Yamazaki, alongside the newly appointed Naohito Fujiki.
The commercial's tagline—'What do you want today? Confidence? Or composure?' 'Both?'—perfectly captures the modern man's desire. For those who want to shine authentically in today's society, it seems what they truly want is both 'confidence' and 'composure.'
"This time, we aimed for a synergy created by the intersection of Yamazaki's 'confidence'—as he has long been a face of uno—and Fujiki's 'composure.' We also infused the commercial itself with uno's signature uniqueness and playfulness."
The 'Anxiety Over Future Hair' That Over Half of Men Feel
Many men today harbor deep-seated concerns about their hair. According to a survey by uno, while hairstyle is the aspect of their appearance men are most conscious of, more than half are anxious about the future of their hair.
Despite this, the reality is that only a mere 25.3% are actively taking concrete steps to care for their hair for the future [4].

"When it comes to anxiety about their hair and scalp, men often point to 'heredity,' saying things like, 'My father and grandfather had the same issue.' The reality is that while many are worried about future hair thinning, they aren't taking any preventative measures. They turn a blind eye, thinking, 'It’s not my problem yet.' You could say they are practicing 'avoidance care' (tōhi kea) instead of 'scalp care' (tōhi kea)—a play on words in Japanese."
Turning Even the Bad Habit of 'Harsh Washing' into an Ally!
Men often find it difficult to start a concrete hair care routine. Lurking in their daily lives is the habit of 'harsh washing' (gashi-gashi arai), a practice that inflicts physical damage on the scalp and hair.
The same survey revealed that one in four men has this habit, and of those, about 70% continue to do it despite knowing it's a bad habit they can't seem to break.

The driving force behind this is a mix of desires: the craving to shorten bath time while still getting that clean, satisfying feeling. Plus, there's the real-world problem that styling products don't seem to wash out completely with just one shampoo, making double-washing a regular habit.
Instead of trying to fight this hard-to-break 'habit,' uno's answer wasn't to force users to change their ways.
"Habits are tough to break. That's why, instead of asking our users to 'try harder' or 'switch up their routine,' we chose a different path. We decided that uno's products would be the ones to change, turning those very habits into an advantage."
The '4D Bounce Foam' Technology Born from Uncompromising Development
This out-of-the-box thinking gave birth to the '4D All-in-One Shampoo.' This single bottle packs four powerful functions—shampoo, treatment, scalp care, and base styling—to the absolute max. Acknowledging that few men use a separate conditioner, it meets the demand for a quicker routine without sacrificing high-performance results.
What's especially worth noting is the proprietary '4D Bounce Foam,' engineered to reduce physical damage during washing.
"The '4D Bounce Foam' is our unique design, focusing on four key aspects: lathering speed, volume, durability, and density. The main challenge we faced was that foam can easily break down when it comes to heavy dirt like hair wax. To overcome this, we developed a unique 'Delayed-Foaming Gel Polymer.'
This is the very technology born from that out-of-the-box thinking. The foam, which usually breaks down with dirt, is now designed to *react* to that dirt. It gradually releases its cleansing ingredients, creating a continuous lather. This allows for a thorough, one-and-done wash that protects both your hair and scalp."
The product comes in two versions to match your desired finish: 'Volume' for body and lift, and 'Smart' for taming frizz and achieving a sleek, manageable style. The brand's meticulous attention to detail also shines through in the bottle design, created to look sharp in any bathroom.
"We aimed for a design that wraps high-tech functionality in a gentle package. Instead of the typical rugged, black-heavy designs of men's products, we used a metallic color to signal its advanced features, while soft curves add a touch of sophisticated refinement. We wanted a design that stimulates both the creative and logical sides of the brain, and we even considered how a partner or child might react to seeing it."
Transforming Your Daily Shampoo into an 'Investment in the Future'
With slogans like "Look great 10 years from now" and "Stay sharp, today and tomorrow," uno's '4D All-in-One Shampoo' transforms your daily wash into an 'investment in your future.' You don't have to overhaul your habits. For the modern man worried about his hair's future and looking for a boost of confidence and calm, this shampoo is the ultimate ally.
"uno excels at spotting the small, emerging trends in society and bringing them to the mainstream. We want to offer consumers better products and help them design their own unique look. From skincare and makeup to hair care, we will continue to lead the market and propose new value."
The phrase 'investing in your future' might conjure up images of new, demanding challenges. But the path uno offers is incredibly practical and smart: upgrading your daily routine without having to abandon your old self. In an ever-changing world, it's about shining bright while staying true to who you are. Why not start tonight, during your bath time, and take the first step toward the future you?
