Experience Enhanced Bounce with the Adoption of a New Material! Explore the Full Details of ASICS "NOVABLAST 5"
Inspired by the structure of a trampoline, ASICS "BLAST" series features exceptional bounce. The latest addition, "NOVABLAST 5," has been released.
By incorporating FF BLAST MAX into the midsole, it enhances lightweight performance and rebound, further pursuing the 'joy of bouncing' felt during running. What evolution has this popular speed running shoe undergone? We spoke with Shohei Horie from ASICS Japan's Performance Running Footwear Department.
Using FF BLAST MAX Throughout the Midsole
The most significant upgrade point of "NOVABLAST 5" is the change in midsole material. In the previous model, "NOVABLAST 4," the lightweight and highly responsive FF BLAST PLUS ECO was used throughout the midsole, but in this model, the more responsive FF BLAST MAX has been adopted.FF BLAST MAX was first introduced in last October's "GLIDERIDE MAX." The midsole of "GLIDERIDE MAX" employs a two-layer structure with FF BLAST MAX on top and FF BLAST PLUS on the bottom. This marks the first time that FF BLAST MAX has been used throughout the midsole in "NOVABLAST 5."
"FF BLAST MAX has about 8.5% higher rebound compared to the cushion foam used in the previous model. This increase enhances the feeling of bounce and propulsion. While the thickness of the heel (41.5mm) and drop (8mm) remain unchanged from the previous model, the area around the big toe has been thickened for better rebound sensation during push-off," Horie explained.

A Structure that Allows a Trampoline-like Bouncing Sensation
The structure with a central hollow in the shoe's sole is designed to deform when under load, allowing the elastic properties of the material to recover, just like the previous model. Coupled with the highly responsive midsole material, it provides a trampoline-like bounce sensation.Additionally, as in the previous model, the contact area is wider, supporting stable movement even in a bounce-heavy shoe design.
The outsole material is the same AHAR LO as before. AHAR LO is highly abrasion-resistant and relatively soft, contributing to a softer impact during landing.
While the high-function model focusing on cushioning, GEL-NIMBUS series, uses OrthoLite for comfort, the insole of the 'NOVABLAST' series prioritizes a bouncier feel by using a firmer EVA material to prevent excessive sinking. Each model features a suitably selected insole.

Shoes that Fit a Wide Range of Runners
With its bouncy and pleasant ride feel, "NOVABLAST" has gained popularity, especially as a daily trainer for runners who regularly participate in races. This model is versatile enough to accommodate everything from daily jogs to high-speed interval training. It has also received positive feedback as a race shoe for runners completing full marathons in 4 to 5 hours. "NOVABLAST 5" stands out as a highly versatile shoe that many runners can incorporate into their running lives.
"The NOVABLAST 5 can be described as a responsive daily trainer, ideal for daily jogs and tempo runs. Athletes and recreational runners using 'NOVABLAST 5' have commented that it feels more cushioned than the previous model, is highly responsive, allows for a bouncy forward motion, and is surprisingly light for its appearance."
The previous model utilized a lightweight and flexible woven material for the upper, but this model adopts engineered mesh with varied weaving and hole sizes according to different areas, enhancing breathability and fit.

When you actually put your foot in, the first thing you notice is the excellent fit. This is something I always feel when I wear ASICS shoes, but especially the fit around the heel is exceptional. It securely and softly holds the heel, creating a sense of unity between the foot and the shoe.
As you start running, you can feel the soft ground contact and pleasant bounce. Compared to the previous model, "NOVABLAST 4," both softness and responsiveness feel enhanced. Unlike the commonly felt push from shoes with a carbon plate, or a sense of lack of control, the ride feels natural and smooth. There are no quirks, and before you know it, you feel like you're running about 5 seconds faster per kilometer than usual.

I highly recommend this shoe to anyone looking for a comfortable jog.
