The Essential Role of Amino Acids in Moisturizing & Anti-Aging: Ajinomoto's "JINO MOIST" Gets a Revamp

Copied to Clipboard
As a leading company in amino acids, Ajinomoto has conducted research on amino acids for over 100 years. From this research emerged the skincare line "JINO."
Since its inception in 1997, JINO has continuously refined its products using the latest amino acid research, and on October 1 of this year, it will launch the refreshed series named "JINO MOIST."
Thus, we spoke with Yumiko Kubo from Ajinomoto Co., Inc. to discuss the fundamentals of amino acids and the newly discovered "Amino Beauty Theory®︎."

The Function of Amino Acids Essential for Hydrated Skin

Can you explain why amino acids are important for the skin?
First, about 60% of our body consists of water, about 20% of proteins, and the remaining approximately 20% is composed of fats and other components. Many people associate proteins with muscles, but bones, organs, and nails are also primarily made up of proteins.
Furthermore, in the skin, approximately 60% is water, about 10% consists of fats, and the ratio of proteins rises to about 30%.
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. There are 20 different amino acids in the body, and their combinations can lead to the formation of approximately 100,000 types of proteins.
For instance, peptides and collagen, which are commonly included in cosmetics, are made from amino acids. Peptides consist of 2 to several dozen amino acids linked together, while collagen is a triple-helix structure formed by numerous amino acid chains intertwined.
What impact does amino acid deficiency have on the skin?
A shortage of the "materials" comprising the approximately 30% of proteins in the skin could undermine its inherent beauty. We want to raise awareness that incorporating amino acids into skincare routines can help promote healthy skin starting from its foundation.
Are there specific amino acids you focus on in skincare?
We are paying attention to two amino acids.
The essential amino acid "histidine" has several characteristics, including care for dullness, acting as a natural "UV protector" for the skin, and providing moisture.
Additionally, the non-essential amino acid "Asparagine" has functions such as making the stratum corneum supple, participating in energy production, and offering hydration.

The "Amino Beauty Theory®" Derived from Years of Research

You have announced the findings of your research on amino acids in the skin as the "Amino Beauty Theory®," what did you discover?
The "Amino Beauty Theory®️" is a skincare approach that nurtures skin proteins, closely related to skin condition, with their foundational amino acids. Our decade-long research revealed that specific proteins within the stratum corneum relate to skin condition, and that these proteins can be cultivated using a special combination of amino acids (amino acid cocktails).
Amino acids can be obtained from both internal and external sources. By combining "consumed amino acids" that circulate throughout the body via diet and supplements with "applied amino acids" delivered precisely where needed through skincare products, we encourage you to "sandwich" your skin with amino acids to aim for skin filled with beauty-proficient proteins.
