When people hear "Aigle," many might envision outdoor wear. However, aside from the apparel, it's impossible to overlook the brand's iconic "rubber boots." This time, we sat down with Shinsaku Okuno, the Senior Merchandise Manager of Aigle at Lacoste Japan, and Miho Takahashi, the Senior Marketing Manager, to discuss the rubber boots that form the foundation of the brand.

Starting with Rubber Boots for Farming

Aigle's founding goes back about 170 years. Let's start with the brand's history, as explained by Takahashi.
"The company was founded in 1853 when Hiram Hutchinson, an American businessman, obtained a patent for the vulcanization process from Charles Goodyear, the inventor of rubber vulcanization[1]. This led to the creation of rubber boots in France's Loire region. These rubber boots became widely used among workers, particularly in agriculture.
"In the 1960s, the company relocated to Angers, where about 200 craftsmen handcrafted an impressive 4,000 pairs of rubber boots daily. Even now, Aigle continues to have its factory there, remaining steadfastly rooted in France."
