When we hear 'made in France boat neck striped shirt,' several things might come to mind, all of them brands with a rich history and unique roots. Today, we are introducing the brand ARMOR LUX, which was established in 1938. We delve into the comfort and reliability of their staple products and talk to Shinichiro Nakamoto, head of the ARMOR LUX division at Lea Mills Agency Ltd.

The Breton Shirt: A Product of the Brittany Region

"ARMOR LUX is a brand born in the Brittany region. Located on a peninsula in the northwest corner of France, the region faces the Atlantic Ocean and Britain across the sea. Originally a factory for producing underwear, it then launched the original factory brand, ARMOR LUX. Like other French boat neck striped shirt brands, it was initially popular as a fisherman's outfit.
"The founder is a Swiss engineer and entrepreneur named Walter Hubacher," explains Nakamoto.

The Relationship with Other Marine Clothing Brands

Earlier, we mentioned the 'fisherman's outfit.' Apparently, the basic template for a French fisherman's clothing includes a boat neck striped shirt. Known brands like SAINT JAMES, Le Minor, and ORCIVAL also produce this style. But what relationship does Armor Lux have with these brands?
"Of the brands mentioned earlier, SAINT JAMES is likely the oldest. Other brands reportedly started around the 1930s as well. Among these four brands, ORCIVAL is the only one that started inland; the other three are in nearby areas and all started by making fishermen's clothing, so they probably have similar roots," Nakamoto explains.

The Beginning of ARMOR LUX

Having learned about the brand and the origin of the boat neck striped shirt, let us now delve into the items themselves.
"The Classic Breton Shirt Long Sleeve was one of the original products of the brand. Available colors include the standard white/rich navy and white/royal blue. It remains one of our staple products to this day," says Nakamoto.

Further Standardized: The Breton Shirt

Next, let us look at a product which could be described as the epitome of a staple, a boat neck striped shirt known as the Breton shirt. Let's learn more about the meticulous attention to detail that goes into making this staple item.
"A lot of people refer to this model as the Basque shirt due to its French Basque origin. In contrast, our ARMOR LUX staple shirt, being made in the Brittany region, is named the 'Breton shirt.'
"One overarching feature of all ARMOR LUX products is their soft touch. Most people tend to think of boat neck striped shirts as having a stiffer, rougher texture, regardless of the brand. However, most people who touch our product say that it feels softer than they expected.
"By using long cotton fibers, we need not spin the threads too much, enabling us to produce items that retain the inherent softness of cotton. ARMOR LUX products are made from fabric that has a soft touch like knitted fabric. We have also been using organic cotton for over a decade," explains Nakamoto.
