Living Colour Explores the Potential of Bacteria Dyeing From Rotterdam
The bio-design project team, Living Colour, is composed of designers Laura Luchtman and Ilfa Siebenhaar, who are based in the Netherlands. They are exploring the potential of bacterial dyeing. Bacterial dyeing, which can dye both synthetic and natural fibers and keeps water consumption and environmental impact to a minimum during the dyeing process without the need for any chemical substances, is gaining attention as a unique technique. In this interview, we focus on their efforts in conducting various activities such as recipe development, research, workshops, and collaborations with companies around the study of bacterial dyeing.
Continuing Activities as Living Colour After Graduating from the Textile Academy
Living Colour is a bio-design research project in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, founded by Laura and Ilfa in 2016. An interesting feature is that both are independent designers: Laura runs her own textile studio, "Kukka", and Ilfa works as a freelance fashion designer at "Studio Ilfa Sabienhaar"."We're often asked if we're a company, but we're neither a corporation nor a startup. Living Colour is our only joint project, carried out in parallel with our main activities, following themes that align with our shared interests."
