Since its founding in France in 1921, MILLET has been at the forefront of mountaineering culture. Now, they have launched their first wear with insect repellent effect, and its convenience is becoming a hot topic. Introducing the "ANTI INSECT" series. With the upcoming season, these insect-repellent shirts are expected to see a surge in use. We spoke with Kanade Furuya from the marketing department of Millet Mountain Group Japan Co., Ltd. about this new release.

Formulated with Skin-friendly Contact Repellent to Keep Pesky Bugs Away

The backpack used in the historic ascent of Annapurna I in 1950, the first-ever 8,000m peak summit, was made by MILLET. The brand's tradition and trustworthiness are now drawing attention to their functional wear.

"We hope the 'Anti Insect' series will become as big a hit as our mesh-structured undergarments 'Drynamic' series, which gained popularity through word of mouth. This season, we're introducing it as an item to protect the body from insects, hoping those who enjoy nature close to home will broadly embrace it."

Given that restrictions due to COVID-19 have been largely lifted this season, we've noticed an increase in people enjoying activities like hiking and camping. Along with that, it seems more people are looking to avoid bugs they encounter in nature. For many who feel that outdoor activities would be much more comfortable if they could avoid bugs, the "Anti Insect" series will undoubtedly be welcome news.

"We use a contact repellent called 'No Fly Zone.' Rather than creating a barrier in the space with chemicals, the contact repellent causes bugs to drop or flee upon contact. Its structure is similar to the natural ingredient found in pyrethrum, making it safe to wear. Unlike coatings applied afterward, the fibers themselves have insect repellent properties, ensuring the effect remains after up to 70 washes."

Surviving 70 washes means the insect-repellent effect can last over one season and even into a second season, even with weekly outdoor use. Besides insect repellent properties, it also has UV-cut and moisture-wicking, quick-drying functions. For activities like hiking and camping, it's a reassuring base layer with this array of features.

"It features a UV-cut function with UPF20+, so it works well in strong summer sunlight during outdoor activities. When you touch it, you’ll notice it’s thin and breathable, making it ideal to wear under a shirt. The moisture-wicking and quick-drying capabilities are also high. The lining is grid-structured, allowing sweat to escape easily. It excels in bringing sweat to the surface and drying quickly."
