"Oh, look, someone there is looking for the wind" "Wooosh, wooosh, wooosh" "Whoosh" "Alright, let's head to the next journey"
I am researching small theater. However, this does not mean I'm engaging in the so-called humanities-oriented "theater studies" where I read plays, investigate historical changes in direction, or analyze the trends of theater in a certain era. My background is in sociology. I am conducting research using methods such as qualitative surveys and fieldwork, immersing myself within social groups. I observe how daily activities are carried out, the topics that come up, and the values that are cultivated within a group. I engage in activities in the field while attempting sociological theorization.
The quote above is part of the text used in the work "風景によせて2022 たびするつゆのふね"[1], created by the performing arts group "Sononochi"[2], with which I regularly conduct fieldwork. This text is not a dialogue but an excerpt from instructions given by staff to performers via "LINE calls." As will be explained later, since the performers are positioned so far apart that they cannot confirm each other's presence, they rely on these instructions to time their performances.
