The number of people who feel they have sensitive skin is increasing. According to a survey by Yano Research Institute, the market size for sensitive skin cosmetics (based on brand manufacturer shipment value) is expected to be 90.5 billion yen in 2022, up 4.0% year-on-year, and 93.5 billion yen in 2023, up 3.3% year-on-year.
The demand for items that cater to sensitive skin is increasing not only in skincare but also in makeup. One of the brands responding to the needs of those with sensitive skin by going a step further is Only Minerals.
This time, we focus on Only Minerals’ limited-edition spring and summer UV care item, "Cool Comfort." Despite the cooling formula, which often gives the impression of being harsh, this item is released for sensitive skin. We delve into the charm that makes it so popular.

Background of UV Care "Cool Comfort" Development

UV Care "Cool Comfort," which will be released for the third time in 2024. Could you tell us about the background of its initial release?
Only Minerals releases a UV series for sensitive skin every year, but with the recent extreme heat and mask-wearing, we started developing cooling cosmetics to make it more comfortable for those with sensitive skin.
At that time, the main cooling cosmetics on the market were menthol-based. While they provided strong cooling, they also caused stinging for some people, and the cooling effect did not last long. Our goal was a formula that was gentle enough for sensitive skin but provided a longer-lasting cooling sensation, which led us to menthol derivatives.
After numerous trials to ensure it felt sufficiently cool even for sensitive skin, we adjusted to the best combination. It became a popular item with many repeat customers and has been released every year as a limited-edition spring and summer item.
Menthol is known as a cooling component. What are the differences between menthol and menthol derivatives?
Generally, menthol is characterized by its quick onset of cooling and a strong refreshing sensation, but nearly all of the cooling disappears within an hour.
On the other hand, the menthol derivative used in "Cool Comfort" is a molecule with other molecules attached to menthol’s structure, giving it slightly different characteristics from menthol. The official name of this cooling agent is "Mentoxypropanediol." It has a milder, longer-lasting cooling sensation compared to menthol.
The cooling effect of menthol derivatives is more gradual. It peaks around 30 minutes and still provides a cooling sensation after 2 hours. Personally, I use "Cool Comfort" to finish my morning makeup, and the cool sensation persists even after I arrive at work.
