Figure skating, a winter sport that integrates artistry with athleticism, is in the limelight as the 2022-2023 season gets underway and ice shows are being held nationwide.
Indispensable for figure skating are the beautiful costumes, harmonized with the individuality of the athletes, their music, and choreography. Among those receiving high praise both domestically and internationally for creating these costumes is designer, Satomi Ito.
In addition to being responsible for Yuzuru Hanyu, who announced his intention to turn professional this year, she has also been involved in making costumes for Yuma Kagiyama, Shun Sato, Mai Mihara and other foreign athletes.
In April of this year, along with the release of her compilation,
'MUSE ON ICE', she also held an exhibition to commemorate its publication. There are many fans who are fascinated by the costumes themselves.
In this interview, we asked Ito about everything from the characteristics of figure skating costumes to little-known stories about the athletes and the competition, as well as her perspective as a designer.
