It's become a habit to walk around outdoor shops looking for functional and reasonably priced products. What particularly catches my eye at the backpack section lately is the "Gregory" "Nano" series. I visited Samsonite Japan Co., Ltd. and spoke with Kenjiro Nakajima, the brand director of the Gregory business unit.
Lightweight & Perfect for One-Day Activities: "Advanced Daypack"
When you think of "Gregory," the first thing that comes to mind is the classic teardrop-shaped "Daypack," which has been beloved by many users for over 45 years since the brand's founding. Often likened to the ride quality of a luxury car by its users, the comfortable-to-carry "Backpack" has subtly evolved through updates, but the "Nano" series stands out as an "advanced version."
The quintessential "Daypack," launched by the outdoor brand "Gregory" in 1977, continues to receive strong support, so it remains in production and sales. Meanwhile, Gregory also offers various bags that have evolved to meet different purposes and uses. Among them, the "Nano" series stands out as highly versatile, reasonably priced, and comfortable for any situation.
The classic "Daypack" has a 26-liter capacity, but the "Nano" series offers a variety of sizes: 14 liters, 16 liters, 18 liters, 20 liters, 24 liters, and 30 liters. (Shoulder bags, sling bags, etc., are also available.)
"Recently, outdoor and everyday tools have become smaller and lighter, and transportation has become more convenient, so I think the trend is toward packing what you need for the day compactly and moving with agility. The 'Nano' series can be your companion 365 days a year, from weekday commutes to weekend activities."
Since the basic design is consistent across the series, if you go by the idea that a larger bag can accommodate more, the 30-liter or 24-liter is recommended. However, the 20-liter size is the most popular among buyers. If you're accustomed to using bags with zip closures, you'll find the 20-liter or 18-liter versions handy.
Depending on how much you carry, a smaller bag may just be the right size for many users. I use a 16-liter "Nano," and even after packing a small shoulder bag with valuables, a foldable umbrella, a lightweight jacket, and an emergency kit (including food, a headlamp, a solar battery, cords, a water purifier, etc.), there's still some room left.
The 'Nano 16', with its top-loading design, shares the structure of the largest 'Nano 30,' where the main compartment opens and closes like a drawstring bag. For those accustomed to mountaineering backpacks, this allows for quick access and efficient use of space, making it suitable for carrying your essentials compactly.
