Helly Hansen, an outdoor brand born in Norway in 1877, has been developing innovative products that can coexist with nature while confronting it, pursuing waterproofing technology for yachtsmen working at sea for over 140 years. Among them, the classic sailing jacket has gained support regardless of the era. We spoke to Ryo Koike of the Helly Hansen Business Division Marketing Group about the renewal of this cornerstone of the brand and its evolution in the context of the brand's history.
Returning to the Brand's Origins as a Maritime Brand
'Helly Hansen,' which will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2027, originally started by making oilskin coats to protect sailors on trading ships from the wind and rain. Koike spoke about the brand's history.
Helly J. Hansen, the founder of the brand, was a captain of the Norwegian merchant navy.
"The brand has grown by wisely taking advantage of the strong points of the technologies we have developed. It didn't start transforming into an outdoor brand until the 1980s.
"While yachting is not very familiar in Japan, it is recognized as a major sport in Europe with as much popularity and excitement as any sport. It was recognized as a piece of wear that could be used even in the harsh conditions of such competitions."
