Keeping Your Precious Memories Close – The Re-Dyeable Wedding Dress "SaboraMi"

Copied to Clipboard
The brand SaboraMi, which produces weddings and dresses, offers a dress that can be re-dyed black.
By re-dyeing, the glossy look characteristic of wedding dresses is toned down, making it a dress suitable for everyday wear. The great appeal is that you can continue wearing a dress imbued with special memories without having to part with it.
This time, we interviewed Kanae Mitomori, who founded "SaboraMi," about the background of starting the brand, the thoughts put into the brand, and the particularities of the product.

Director, Designer
Active as a pattern maker, designer, and fashion director for imported licenses and domestic brands. Driven by the desire to "expand the range of options" felt during the process of organizing her own wedding, she launched the brand "SaboraMi," which handles wedding production and dresses.

The Birth of "SaboraMi" Began with Her Own Wedding

First, could you tell us about the work you have done so far?
I originally worked at a company as a pattern maker and designer. After resigning, I spent some time traveling abroad and relaxing before transitioning to freelance pattern and design work through an introduction from an acquaintance.
I've been involved with various brands, from casual wear brands to those handling dresses. Currently, I belong to an apparel company with which I previously collaborated.
What led to your interest in the bridal industry?
My own wedding was the trigger. While preparing for the wedding, I felt a "sense of restriction."
For example, I had to search for a dress at shops proposed by the wedding venue. If I wanted to bring in my dress, hire my chosen photographer, or invite my hair and makeup artist, additional fees would be charged.
If you hire your photographer or hair and makeup artist, you have to explain the wedding details yourself, which requires extra effort and incurs additional costs, which seemed unreasonable. I felt that such a system in the bridal industry was not for the benefit of the customers.
Moreover, even though weddings are generally a once-in-a-lifetime event, I had a desire to build relationships with those I met through the wedding afterward.
Thinking of a re-dyeable dress came to mind while I was searching for my dress for my wedding. I thought it was a waste to rent a dress for tens of thousands of yen and only wear it for one day.
I then considered buying a one-piece dress of my liking that I could wear even after the wedding, but I couldn't find it at all. At that time, I thought it would be nice if there were dresses that I could wear after the wedding.
How did you act toward realizing the idea of “If only it existed”?
Before joining my current company, I had expressed my desire to the president to "create a brand by myself," so I decided to launch it as an in-house venture. First, I submitted a proposal to the president as a new business.
After that, I received opportunities to talk with the president and directors and received their advice.
I got married in May 2022, submitted the proposal in June, and started preparations in October. The full-scale start was from January of the following year.
When launching the brand, I initially thought, "Not only will I sell dresses, but I will also be able to offer total wedding production to those who resonate with the concept of 'SaboraMi'."
Regarding wedding production, I proceeded with preparations while learning various know-hows from advisors.
Creating the product was truly challenging, but even without a role model, we brought it to fruition through careful planning and consultation with artisans.
Regarding the production of weddings, we are constantly brainstorming ideas on how to create a special wedding experience for our clients.
