Polyurethane resin is a material widely used in everything from synthetic leather, artificial leather, the soles of shoes, to paints and coating agents. In addition to the demand for improved functionality such as durability and chemical resistance, there was an issue from a sustainability perspective because it was derived from petroleum.
In that context, the
Mitsubishi Chemical Group has developed a world-first plant-derived polycarbonate diol (hereinafter referred to as PCD) '
BENEBiOL™', which has been increasingly adopted in various fields in recent years.
PCD is one of the main raw materials for polyurethane resin, and BENEBiOL™, being plant-derived, has made it possible to achieve high functionality that was not achievable with traditional petroleum-derived PCD, in addition to being sustainable.
Specifically, BENEBiOL™ has a bio-based content of up to 92%, and has improved durability and chemical resistance, among others, while also overcoming the weakness of flexibility.
For this feature, we asked Yoshikazu Kanamori and Kohei Iizuka of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation's BENEBiOL Group about the characteristics of BENEBiOL™, its development as a product, and its future potential.
