As thick-soled running shoes equipped with carbon plates appeared and various marathon records were set, World Athletics established rules regarding shoes in 2020. Since then, the competition to develop shoes has generally adhered to these rules, but now, New Balance has introduced a rule-breaker.
For road running shoes (which differ from track rules), regulations stipulate that the sole thickness must be less than 40mm and only one plate can be included. However, New Balance's "FuelCell SuperComp TRAINER" revealed in June this year has soles exceeding 40mm. In other words, it does not follow the rules for elite athlete competition shoes. According to Mamiya, the "FuelCell SuperComp TRAINER" was developed to "break through personal barriers in training and racing, record barriers, and common sense," pursuing speed beyond the limits of the rules.
