The Origins & Cutting Edge of HOKA – Explaining "MAFATE" Born for Enjoying Trail Running

Currently popular on the road, trail, and as a town-use model, HOKA has an essential model in its history: the trail running model “Mafate,” which can be said to be the origin of HOKA.
 
The “Mafate Origins” released this season is based on the trail running shoes “Mafate 3” released in 2010, with modern materials used for the sole and an updated, modern upper tailored to fit daily lifestyles. On the other hand, the trail running shoes “Mafate Speed 4,” which continue the Mafate lineage, are designed to maintain high mobility even on long-distance trails.
 
So why has “Mafate” gained strong support from trail runners and also achieved high popularity as a lifestyle model?
 
The name “Mafate” comes from Mafate Cirque on Reunion Island, the venue for the Grand Raid de la Réunion, known as one of the world’s toughest 100-mile races. Its name was given due to being equipped with features for conquering rugged trails.

“The key feature is using a two-layer midsole named PROFLY, which combines a moderately elastic foam to enhance cushioning and a firm foam to increase propulsion. Its high rebound properties greatly benefit rocky courses,” says HOKA Senior Field Service Rep, Masao Ando.
