Buy Vintage Clothes from Influencers on the Trending Flea Market Service 'pickyou'

With the expansion of the vintage clothing market, various flea market services have been launched, but 'pickyou' operated by Pickyou, Inc., a service focused on influencers, is grabbing attention.

In this flea market service, influencers such as models active on Instagram are the sellers, and buyers can acquire vintage clothes from the people or styles they admire.

For influencers, there is a major benefit of significantly simplifying the process of listing items. Additionally, the added value of being worn by the influencer can be reflected in the price of the vintage clothes, making it possible to sell a variety of items, not just popular brands, at a more attractive price than existing flea market services.

This time, we had a conversation with Rio Tomita, president of the company, and Kota Kawai, co-founder and director who also works as an artist, about the details of the service, differences from existing flea market services, and future developments.

A Flea Market Service to Buy Vintage Clothing from Influencers

Firstly, please tell us how you came to start 'pickyou'.
TomitaOriginally, when I was in my fourth year of university, I started a flea market service that would later become 'pickyou', focusing on individuals such as influencers.
I myself was attracted by the idea of 'buying vintage clothes from influencers', and it was from my own experience.
At that time, when buying vintage clothes from influencers on Instagram, the transaction was done in person or through Instagram, which was inefficient and inconvenient. Also, the same could be said for the influencers who are the sellers.
Therefore, I thought, "Why not replace this process with something more digital and straightforward?" and together with Kawai, who was a classmate in high school, we explored the possibility of a flea market service where you can buy vintage clothes from influencers.
As a result, we found cases of similar services overseas and after interviewing those around us, we came to the conclusion that there is a potential demand in Japan, and we started this business in 2022.

What is the 'pickyou' System?

Please tell us about the benefits for sellers and buyers, and the differences from other flea market services.
TomitaInfluencer sellers can easily list items by sending their vintage clothing to our distribution center, after which they register the product description, price, and wearing photos.
There is no need to deal with customer service and shipping tasks, which were necessary in existing flea market services. Until now, it is thought that sellers had to spend about 15 units of time, but that can be reduced to about one-fifth.
In addition, although so-called no-brand vintage clothes often don't get a price or are very cheap at other flea markets and vintage clothing stores, 'pickyou' can sell them at attractive prices because they have the added value of being 'a one-off item worn by an influencer'. Therefore, there are also significant financial benefits for the seller.
KawaiOn 'pickyou', each influencer has their own page which provides buyers an opportunity to discover brands they didn't know about. For those who love clothes, they can learn about new brands from the influencer's style.
I think a big feature of the service is that through the 'pickyou' platform, users can discover, "There's someone like this" and "So there is this kind of fashion," finding their own favorite style through people.
TomitaIn addition, after buyers pay for the items they want on 'pickyou', we ship the items from our distribution center. Therefore, no interaction between users occurs if a problem arises.
Further, we can ship as soon as the same day, so buyers can get their desired vintage clothes immediately.
In this way, by handling all customer service processes, we are able to provide the service through a rational process.
