The Key to NFTs Is "The Joy of Ownership" – Exploring the Potential of Digital Pets with Dress-Up NFT "sloth"

In recent years, amidst the release of various NFT projects, the service "sloth" for NFT beginners by alu Inc. has been garnering attention. 'sloth' allows users to enjoy a unique digital pet by dressing up a sloth "Base NFT" with "Costume NFTs" and "Item NFTs."
Holders can not only dress-up and sell their purchased sloth as a single NFT but also trade individual costumes and items separately. There are also plans to implement a feature where creators can design and sell costumes and items to earn revenue. Collaborations with various individual creators and companies for exclusive costumes have already been announced.
Moreover, sloth distinguishes itself by not aiming to be a short-term speculative NFT but by pursuing the potential of NFTs that provide a sense of ownership in the mid to long term, positioning itself differently from the mainstream NFTs currently available.
Why did they decide to launch such an NFT? We asked Keita Kawaji, the project manager of "sloth," about the background of the project, its features, and future developments.

Enjoyment Beyond Speculation in NFTs

alu Inc. is a company developing services to support creators, with the mission of "realizing a world where creative activities accelerate."
In recent years, they have been actively involved in NFT projects, and last September released a beginner-friendly NFT called "marimo" ahead of sloth, selling out all 10,000 pieces.
marimo also garnered attention by presenting an approach focused on the enjoyment of nurturing and connecting holders, aiming not to be a speculative NFT. sloth builds on the experience gained from marimo.
"marimo was our company's first project to enter the NFT space, and it also offered new value as an NFT.
"Currently, there are NFT projects aimed at making short-term profits. Of course, speculative enjoyment is one essence of NFTs, so we don't deny that aspect.
"However, when we thought about creating NFTs that make both holders and creators happy, we believed there could be other possibilities and launched marimo with the concept of long-term growth and enjoyment.
"The result was that all 10,000 NFTs sold out. Furthermore, we made an unexpected discovery: the enjoyment users derived from 'ownership' was significant.
"While the concept of marimo was 'nurturing,' many users named their marimo uniquely, such as 'marimo Taro.' When we officially released a feature allowing users to name their NFTs, it was well-received and widely used.
"Although marimo is a simple, round shape and not exactly an NFT art piece like works by recognized creators, it received an unexpectedly positive response from holders who took ownership and cherished it.
"It seems that holders are not just saving NFTs as mere images. They feel joy in ownership and develop an attachment. We began to think that there might be new possibilities there.
"Therefore, for the next NFT project, we aimed to create a digital pet that makes the joy of ownership more tangible, leading us to sloth."
